Floods highlight fears over proposed housing

RESIDENTS in Bearsted are more adamant than ever that new house building should not be permitted, fol- lowing the Christmas floods in Kent. Lilk Meadow and land at Roundwell, in Sutton Street and Cross Keys, was flooded as the wind whipped up and water levels rose over the holiday period – flooding the area of land currently proposed for development. Country House Developments,

Guy Osborne’s company, wants to put 39 homes – both private and social housing – on land at Lilk Meadow, to be re-named Roundwell Park. Some 200 protestors who objected

to the scheme at a public meeting in December have now stepped up their objections following the latest floods. They say there will be increased traffic and overcrowded schools, but

Parish councillors co-opted

TWO new members have been co- opted to Bearsted Parish Council. Former councillor Les Ethridge,

from Merton Road, who resigned in 2010, and Ernie Hill, from Manor Close, put their names forward. Mr Ethridge was co-opted in

place of Alison Hodges, who has moved away from the area. Mr Hill was co-opted in place of

Barbara Dunford, who resigned after being questioned over a pos- sible conflict of interest with her event management company. Cllr Ethridge and Cllr Hill are long-standing residents of Bearsted, with an interest in planning issues. Cllr Hill is a health and safety con- sultant, while Cllr Ethridgeworked in medical research.

the Christmas deluge proved even worse than usual, with The Street im- passable for several days. Residents fear an increase in the number of homes will exacerbate is- sues on the flood plain and make house insurance difficult to obtain. Bearsted Parish Council is also op-

posed to the proposal, which will be debated byMaidstone planning com- mittee. Mr Osborne insists suitable drainage measures will be put in place.

Trees ‘diseased’

A PLANNING application has been submitted to fell four protected horse chestnut trees at Snowfield, Yeoman Lane, Bearsted. An application says the diseased

trees would be replaced by four beech trees.Work is also proposed to a holm oak and yew tree. Maid- stone Council will decide.
