Village football club is focus of picture book

LOCAL history and sporting buffs will be delighted with the emergence of a new book, highlighting the highs – and a few lows – of Bearsted Foot- ball Club. Retired civil engineer Ian Lambert

has spent three years compiling the extensive pictorial history, with some fascinating photos culled from the archives aswell as memories of more up-to-date events. Mr Lambert, from Roseacre Lane,

has been involved with the village cricket club for more than 60 years and first played for the football club in 1956, when he was still at school. He played until 1969 when his

work took him to Hertfordshire, re- turning in 1977, by which point he claims: “I was too old!” Mr Lambert also played a few

games with the Maidstone United re- serves when the club was based in London Road. “A History of Bearsted Football

Club” – bearing the club’s familiar brown bear logo – charts the progress of the club from its forma- tion in 1895 to the present day,

through its domination of the local football scene in the 1970s to its cur- rent ambitions of playing in the Kent Amateur League. The book also documents the for- mation of the junior teams, the links with the French club of Archeres, and the Sunday and veteran teams. The importance of the social club

and fundraising is highlighted and there is a tribute to the late Ray Hutchins, who gained two England youth caps before coming to play for Bearsted. The A4 book has 250 pages and

Ian Lambert with the book he has written on the history of Bearsted Football Club

contains more than 100 photographs and illustrations. Priced £19.99, it can be obtained

via the club’s website – www.bearst- edfc.co.uk . All profits from the sale will go to-

wards floodlights and facilities for the club at its ground in Honey Lane, Otham. Mr Lambert said: “The club changed dramatically in the 1970s when all the new housing was built. The club is now bigger and better than it has ever been – but needs fa- cilities to match.”
