Concern over plans for burial ground at park

MOVES to turn part of the White Horse Wood country park into a burial ground could threaten its identity, the parish council fears. Councillors raised concerns

Meetings normally held on the third Monday of each month at the Marriott Tudor Park Hotel. Public welcome.

Church trust IT was hoped a meeting would be held with the Archdeacon Stephen Taylor in February to progress the possibility of forming a trust to take on the day-to-day running of the parish church of St Mary’s in Thurnham. Cllr Richard Smith, who will be

involved in the talks, told council- lors that several useful meetings have been held with interested vol- unteers from the village and that safeguarding the future of the church is the primary concern.

about Greenacres Woodland Buri- als’ interest in leasing part of the park – including Thurnham Castle – from KCC. The parish had only recently been made aware of the idea, despite talks between the two parties dating back four years. Vice-chairman Richard Smith

said: “We are not opposed in prin- ciple to the idea of part of the park becoming a burial ground, but we are concerned that this does not be- come the central feature of what

was, after all, a millennium project, which we supported and worked on to create a recreational space for families to enjoy.” Members agreed to write to the county council. If the scheme is ap- proved they want assurances that:  sign-posting stays for the coun- try park and the area used for bur- ial be small and limited to wooded areas;  the castle site is protected;  the Environment Agency is happy with the proposal in view of thewater catchment;  the design of the proposed hall for funerals be of a better standard, with parts made available for com-

A LINK between Thurnham, Stockbury and Detling councils over common issues is to be discussed. The A249 industrial estate and the county show- ground are two such issues, members felt. Councillors proposed a joint approach to planning

and other matters. Parish council chairman Daniel Skinner said he was concerned about the legality of such a body and would prefer an informal arrange- ment, but itwas agreed that draft proposals should be presented to the next parish council meeting.

munity use, free of charge, and for a permanent exhibition of artefacts found in Thurnham. The parish councilwants the bur-

ial ground, if permitted, to be the trigger to help fund a roundabout on the A249 near the site. Greenacres says the scheme

would enhance facilities and in- clude a visitors’ centre and toilets. Parking charges will be removed and paths improved. Mike Hill, KCC’s spokesman for community services, said: “The re- newed focus on maintaining the woodland will benefit generations to come.”Aformal planning appli- cation has yet to be submitted.

Parishes consider teaming up Industrial estateworries

COUNCILLORS reiterated concerns about the pro- posal for a 56,000sqm light industrial estate on farm- land south of the A20 near junction 8 of the M20. Thurnham has objected to theWaterside Park ap- plication via a statement through the Joint Parishes Group. Chairman Daniel Skinner said: “It seems that all organisations are united in their concerns about a development in this area. It is thought that any application granted will lead to wholesale de- velopment north and south of the A20.”
