SAN DIEGO COMMUNITY EVENTS:

2014 Young Professionals Council Academy Want to get involved in your community,

Fat Tuesday Hillcrest Mardi Gras is on the move this year! Hillcrest

has hosted a fun-filled Fat Tuesday event for many years and 2014 will be no exception— just a little farther east in location. Now situ- ated at the east end of the neighborhood, on University Avenue between 10th and Herbert Streets, Hillcrest Fat Tuesday happens on (you guessed it) Tuesday, March 4 and will feature a nighttime dance party, gourmet food vendors, street performers and an outdoor nightclub with fab DJs. And in 2014, for the first time ever, a “Bon Ton Roulet” parade down University Avenue! Just like Pride, your busi- ness or organization can show its true colors by showing off your favorite decorations and costumes. All proceeds benefit the Hillcrest Business Association and LGBT Youth Scholar- ships.) For tickets and more information regarding entering a float or to purchase tickets to Fat Tuesday Hillcrest, go to fabuloushillcrest.com.

The YPC Academy will help to expand the ranks of young LGBT leaders who are ready to further equality for our community through board service for a variety of agencies, not-for-profit organizations and government commissions. Post-academy, The Center will work with the graduates to assist them in obtaining place- ments. All sessions will be held at The Center on Saturdays, beginning March 1, March 29, April 12, April 26, May 3, May 31 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. You are encouraged to attend the regular meeting on Tuesday, February 4 at which The Center’s CEO, Dr. Delores Jacobs will be present for an info session regarding the 2014 Academy. Queer/Trans Youth Clothing Drive Even with all the strides we have made

toward equality, LGBTQ homelessness is a serious and continuous problem. Statistics from the National Coalition for the Homeless show that 20 percent of homeless youths are LGBT, while in comparison the general youth population is only 10 percent LGBT. Once homeless, they are at higher risk for victimization, mental health problems and unsafe sexual practices. 58.7 percent of LGBT homeless young people have been sexu- ally victimized compared to 33.4 percent of heterosexual homeless youths and they are roughly 7.4 times more likely to experience acts of sexual violence than heterosexual homeless. LGBT homeless young people commit suicide at higher rates (62 percent) than heterosexual homeless (29 percent). Do you need more reasons to get involved?

San Diego Museum Month Have a burning desire to go above and beyond the amorous adventures typical to this month of love?

Perhaps you should incorporate a little culture into your romantic rendezvous and totally impress your love-bunny with a visit to the multitude of museums throughout San Diego County… then cap the eve- ning with your favorite aperitif to set the mood. February is Museum Month and 2014 marks the 25th year for this event sponsored by Macy’s and created by the San Diego Museum Council. A pass available for purchase at any of Macy’s 14 locations in the San Diego Area allows up to four visitors access to half-price admissions—and with 42 participating museums you can’t possibly become bored. You’d better study up, Romeo, if you want to impress your boo with your stunning knowledge; the participating museums range from the many offerings located in Balboa Park, the Midway and Children’s Museums Downtown, The Oceanside Museum of Art and the Tijuana Estuary Visitors Center in Imperial Beach. For more information on where to get tickets or on participating museums go tosandiegomuseumcouncil.org.
