The Show Must Go On: THE RETURN OF
by tim parks THE BATTLE LINES ARE BEING DRAWN at the Birch North Park Theatre as Tantrums
& Tiaras: Battle of the Bar Queens makes its triumphant return to San Diego. And this year’s unseasoned drag contestants, who by day pose as mild-mannered bar employees, are primp- ing, plucking and tucking themselves in preparation for the glitzy rumble.
Contenders will be decked out in drag finery as
they take a walk on their wilder sides (in high heels, no less). Each has the fervent wish of being the queen to take home the coveted crown in an event that turns theMiss America Pageant on its head. The Rage Monthly spoke with Matt Ramon of
Urban Mo’s, one of the event’s organizers, the shows fabulous hostess Babette Schwartz and singer and special guest judge, Kristine W., all on hand to judge who can best pitch a fit. The decision to bring back the fundraiser, which benefits The Center, was most definitely a bitter- sweet process. “It started as a spin-off from Best in Drag Show in L.A.,” Ramon said. “Daniel Bodenmiller, my partner at the time, was in that show for three years and wanted S.D. to have an amazing fundraiser. He turned to me one night and said, ‘Let’s do the show here—are you in?’ And that is how it started.” Ramon shared, “Danny passed away after the first show, in June the following year.
He and I were in the process of putting together the 2010 show. “We were together for 18 years and I could not put the show on, it was too difficult a memory for me.” He continued, “This past year Ian Johnson from The Center said he wanted to support me in putting the show on and I felt that in memory of Danny, we need to bring it back for San Diego. He would have wanted this—the show must go on. So we’re bringing it back and will dedicate this show and every future show to him.”
