WINTERis here and the end of January and Feb- ruary can mean harsh weather, which means nowis the time to check your car is prepared. While safety is an im-

portant consideration all year long, there are certainly some auto maintenance jobs and safety checks which are specific to chilled air and winter driving. In addition to the added perils of winter driving, the change in weather can bring peril to your car’s systems. Freezing

tempera-

tures, salted roads and wintry

precipitation can gang up on your

car if you don’t give it a maintenance session. These winter mainte- nance jobs will keep you out of trouble. Check your antifreeze. Your antifreeze is an essential part of your car’s winter protection. Your car contains a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze. Make sure the level is

full and the mixture is close to 50/50. Inspect your tyres.

Take time to check the tread depth and pres- sure.

Believe it or not, they

lose a little pressure when it gets cold. Do you need snow

tyres? Replace your wipers? What do your wind- shield wipers have to do with winter weather? Two things. First, any- thing falling from the sky is going to end up on your windshield. Second, when it is

snowing you will be driving through that mess which is left on the road which includes salt and this sprays up over your bonnet. Check your wind- shield washer fluid. You will be using lots

of washer fluid as you try to keep your wind- shield clean. Don’t fill your washer fluid res-

ervoir with anything except washer fluid as this won’t freeze. Clean battery posts. Starting problems are a pain at any time of the year. Regularly

treating

your battery to a clean- ing can keep electrical gremlins at bay. Inspect spark plug wires. These affect performance and general reliability. Be sure yours are in top shape.

Inspect your brakes.

Be sure your brakes are in tip top condition. Check your engine oil. This should go with-

out saying and should be done regularly any- way.
