DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
EXECUTIVE It Is a Honor to Serve
During the past several months I have enjoyed many experiences that elevated my enthusiasm for serving, and being a representative of the trucking industry. Scott Godfrey, UTA President and I have taken the opportunity to visit dozens of members and potential members in their offices and shops. I have come away from each of these visits with a greater sense of appreciation for what we collectively represent as a trucking community. Although each of these visits had individual distinctions, all portrayed common values.
Even though, I have spent most of my professional life involved with commercial drivers and carriers, and have always respected the nature of this wonderful industry, it was good for me to see firsthand how committed each of these carriers were to their employees, families and community. I enjoyed immensely hearing the histories of each company and the profound respect offered for those who blazed the way for those operating businesses today. It was impressive to see the impact that quality companies have on their local communities by providing jobs, charitable contributions, scholarships, sponsorships and community leadership. These visits have left a lasting impression on me and have amplified the feeling of pride and honor I have in serving this industry.
In January, I traveled to Washington DC for training offered through the American Trucking Associations (ATA). In the two days spent there, I learned a tremendous amount about the trucking industry from a national perspective, the ATA organization and offerings, politics, etc. While there, other state trucking association executives and I were able to witness the presentation of 19 new American Road Team Captains. This group of drivers submitted themselves to an intense selection process that more that 2,000 drivers competed. It was wonderful to hear the individual stories of success and professionalism. As I spent time with this group of highly committed people, I was impressed with their concern for safety, their willingness to present themselves as a positive image of the industry and personal examples of integrity. Once again, I felt a sincere sense of honor to be associated with such good people and to be affiliated with such a critically important industry.
These experiences came at a perfect time. During the last couple of weeks, I have had numerous opportunities to introduce myself to legislators and government officials as part of the legislative session. It is with pride that I hand them my business card, which reflects the association’s role and my personal responsibility to serve as “Utah’s Voice in Trucking”. Again, it is a humbling honor to serve such a fine organization. I look forward to many more chances to interact with each member of the association.
