DECISIONPOINT
Continued from page 23 LEARNING AND KEY CONSIDERATIONS
When hiring security, employers and landlords should be careful to ensure they have hired a reputable agency that can be trusted to perform security services competently. When customers or visitors become unruly or violent, the security service should move quickly to defuse the violence and, where appropriate, call police. Additionally, the employer or landlord
should regularly review their performance--while keeping in mind that review and direction are different concepts. If an outside contractor is hired to provide security services, the employer or landlord should take care to ensure that they are not dictating the response that will be made by security in each instance. The security firm should provide well-trained and equipped professionals. In the event that the security service has failed to adequately perform its intended service, corrective measures should be taken, up to and including terminating the relationship where necessary.

WORKPLACE VIOLENCE NEWS - continued Situational Awareness
Situational Awareness can be defined as; “the perception of environmental elements in relation to time and space, the comprehension of their meaning and the projection of their status after some variable has changed.” It is part of a field of study that is concerned with the environment critical to decision making in complex, dynamic systems. When it comes to your personal safety, Situational Awareness involves utilizing all of your senses and intuition in order to be more aware of what is happening in your vicinity. This allows us to make better tactical decisions and better understand how the situational dynamics, available information and ones actions will impact your safety both now and in the future.
Situational Awareness is an important mindset not just for your personal safety, but also as a fundamental building block in your overall personal security and self-defense plan. In order to understand the concept of Situational Awareness and why it plays such a large role in keeping you and your family safe we only need to look at the world around us. Often this mindset is relegated to the brains back burner, rather than up front and center where it will do the most good.
We can improve our Situational Awareness through training and education. Paying close attention to potential threats and hazards in our environment and mentally running through the response options available is an excellent way to start improving your Situational Awareness. Paying close attention to the potential threats in our environment goes a long way towards eliminating many unacceptable risks to your safety and reducing the impact of many that we can‘t eliminate. Good Situational Awareness can reduce your chances of being targeted for crime or violence by up to 75%.
