MEMBERS of Wales YFC let their talents shine at one of the movement’s
flagship events. The Wales YFC Eisteddfod
attracted competitorsfromall over Wales to Anglesey Pavilion, Anglesey,inNovember. During the daymembers com-
peted in avariety of competi- tions including singing, recita- tion and humorous items, as well as homework competitions that included literacy,prose and art. The overall winner was
Ceredigion YFC whotook home the coveted Mansel Charles Shield
with 46 points.

year at Aberystwyth University studying creative writing.

Môn wasparticularly special for Megan as her mumwon it in 1984, when the event wasalso held in Ynys Môn. The impressive chair was

PembrokeshireYFC,won the Ardudwy Cup forbest soloist in the music section after spectacu- lar performances in the under 26 solo and song from amusical or film competitions. The Menter Iaith Sir Benfro Challenge Trophy, awarded to the best two-voice party waswon by the BroDdyfi,Montgomery and the choir competition was wonbyMeirionnyddYFC. Nest Jenkins,Ceredigion YFC
wasthe best individual in the recitation section, Rhosybol YFC,YnysMôn wonthe pop song competition and the Joy Cornock Cup formost promis- ing individual wasawarded to Heulen
Cynfal from
MeirionnyddYFC. Pembrokeshiretook home the
Dyffryn Nantlle Shield forcom- ing out on top in the cerdd dant section, and winning the DenbighshireFarmers Union of Wales trophyfor the homework section were Ceredigion YFC. The Elonwy Phillips Trophy
forthe highest-placed county in stage competitions wasalso won by Ceredigion. The winners all receivedindi-
vidual prizes which were funded by the Ynys Môn Federation.

Assembly hears voice of future
WALES YFC has ensured thatthe voice of the next generation is being heardatthe highest level. Ruralaffairs committee vice-chairman
Ceri Davies gave evidence at ameeting of the National Assembly forWales environ- ment and sustainability committee,along with Wales YFC rural development officer Sarah Price. Ceri gave practical examples to illustrate
the views of WalesYFCon sustainableland management. Agroup of YFC members worked together to compile the evidence beforehand to ensurethatthe opinions of the rural youth movement were put forward effectively. Ceri Davies said: “It is very reassuring
howconcerned the Assembly areofhaving ayoung voice to give their views on the environmental welfareofthe agricultural industry. “The importance of young people in the
industry wasalso stronglyechoed by both NFU Cymru and FUW.Wales YFC are extremelygrateful to have had the opportu- nity to be able to present our views on this significant topic.” Wales YFC’sresponse to the committee’s
inquiry discusses their vision forsustainable land management, howtoovercome any challenges thatmay stop the vision evolv- ing, and howthey believe they can maintain and attract newentrants into the land- based sector. The writtenreport is availableonthe

Business award gets bank backing
WALES YFC has launched a newaward to support rural busi- nesses and young entrepreneurs. The Wales YFC and NatWest Business of the Year Awardis open to Wales YFC members under 30 years old with an exist- ing business. The first prizewinner will
receive £1,000 and therewill be tworunners-up. As well as the financial prize,

Community spirit reaps reward
THE community spirit of youngsters in Llandefalle,Brecknock, has been reward- ed with atop award. Llandefalle YFC arethe winners of
Wales YFC En-Pact Challenge,support- ed by Natural Resources Wales. The En-Pact Challenge rewards mem-
bers fortheir efforts to enhance local environments
and communities.
Llandefalle’swinning project, entitled ‘Llandefalle Hedge Their Bets’ aimed to reintroduce the traditional craft of hedge
laying into their club by training mem- bers,inthe hope thatitwill aid family farms in becoming moresustainableand also to help preservethe skill forfuture generations. Llandefalle member Gethin Jones
impressed the panel of judges with his passionate exhibition of the work during the RoyalWelsh Winter Fair. Wales YFC rural affairs chairman

together and learn newskills. “They also ultimatelybenefit the wider
Welsh environment and rural community. Manyofour clubs across Wales get involved in community and environmen- tal projects on aregular basis –volun- teering skills and
