Graeme hasbeentrialling thenew RitchieCalving Suckling gate on thefamily mixed farmwhere they are responsible forthe 360 Limousin crosssuckling herd. Calving gateshavebeenusedonthe farmfor sevenyears with previous Ritchie models thepasttwo,but thenew design with itsmuchimprovedsafetyfeatures forcow,calf and stockperson, hasprovidedanoticeably better health and safetyadvantage.
Likemostdairy-suckling herds, Graeme occasionally hasadifficultcow or heifer which is notkeentosuckleher
calf.Thisnew Ritchiegate with itshingedlifting lower railand adjustable headstocksecurelyholds thecow,enabling thecalf to be easedonto thecow withoutincurring kicking.

Graeme hashad twocalving pensconverted to incorporate thenew Ritchie gate,withbothpensoperational
mostdays.The gate is able to swing into and away from themainpen area enabling cowmanagementtobeeasilydirected. Whencalving difficulties have occurred, thelocal vethas praisedthe simplicityofthe gatesoperation and thesafetyitprovides. The removal of thehigher side barwiththe cow secured,has even allowed acaesarean operationtobecarried outona standing cow. Cleansing afterbirth and trimmingare twotasks that can alsobesafelycompleted.
