Mast request THE parish council was to ask if any redundant dishes or parts of the aerial on the fire head- quarters mast in Tovil could be taken down. It follows an application from
Kent Fire and RescueHQto put another dish on the existing mast. Cllr Barry Beardwell said:
“It’s certainly worth us asking. It is quite an eyesore.”
Play area IT was hoped a borough coun- cil representative would join the next parish council meeting to discuss the play area at the Bridge MillWay Open Space. The parish is looking to take responsibility for the children’s area, but says it needs more in- formation on the costs and du- ties involved before making a decision.
Flooding fears COUNTY Councillor Brian Clark was asked by the parish council to take up the issue of flooding across parts of the area, the additional advertising being put up by Lidl and the damage to grass in Straw Mill Hill caused by construction work at the old Rose Inn site.
Dog bin replaced A NEW dog waste bin will be bought by the parish council to replace the broken one in Tovil Road. Members felt that al- though it had been repaired with tape, it provided a less than smart introduction to the area.
Budget plans DISCUSSIONS on the budget for 2014/15 were due to start in December and a draft budget will be produced for all parish councillors. All areas of expenditure will
be looked at closely during the budget talks.
Seasonal colour WINTER pansies have been planted in parish council planters across the area, in- cluding those on the corner of Burial Ground Lane and Far- leigh Hill.
Talks over community centre
THE parish council is to hold wider talks with the YMCA about progressing its project to replace the children’s hut in Barfeston Close, off Courtenay Road, with a community centre for Tovil. The proposed two-storey cen-
tre would have an outdoor play area and parking. Parish coun- cillors supported the idea in principle of assisting theYMCA with funding, probably with equipment and/or services, rather than with the construc- tion costs. Other funding could be aimed at helping with the running costs in the first two or three years. Cllr Derek Mortimer, a trustee
of the YMCA, said: “We have made a good business plan for the project, but it would not make good business sense to go ahead at the moment without the support from other parties.”
Land deal set to go ahead
THE parish council has agreed to buy land at Little Switzer- land, off Cave Hill, once out- standing issues have been satisfactorily resolved. The parish council agreed by
seven votes to one to continue with the purchase once it had received assurances that it has vehicle access to the land and confirmation of the amount of
funding to be contributed by the Valley Conservation Society. Councillors agreed that with Maidstone Borough Council’s local plan still incomplete and with doubt over the amount of development land available the land should be bought as soon as possible to secure it from de- velopment for future genera- tions.
Funding available for footpath PLANS to create a circular walk linking the riverwithHudson’s Quarry have taken another step forward. Parish councillor Derek Mortimer said that just over £4,000
was now available from a county council community grant and this would be topped up with £1,000 from county councillor Brian Clark. Cllr Mortimer said: “I’ve aspired to get this circular path cre-
ated for a long time. It’s still very much in the early stages, but we are getting there. “Next we have to let the borough council know what we are proposing.”
Arrests made after crime reports
ARRESTS have been made fol- lowing incidents in Tovil, ac- cording to the area’s PCSO Matt Williams. He told the parish council
that two arrests followed a fight between two men in Farleigh Hill, when a fence was dam- aged; other arrests were in rela-
tion to an assault and the theft of a mobile phone from a cus- tomer at Tesco. The officer also reported a ladder taken from a van, crimi- nal damage to a fire riser and re- ports of erratic driving through the area after dark, which were being followed up.

An artist impression of how the new Tovil Community Centre in Barfeston Close would look

withwife Kitty, where he hopes to spend more time with fam- ily.
He will lead his last service

Parish council vice chairman
Glyn Charlton said: “Christo- pher has contributed heavily to the village plan and given much of his time to improve the area. He cares about Maid- stone and about the way plan- ning should be co-ordinated. “Aswell as that, he is a really
kind man, probably too nice to have to take all the unnecessary grief he has been forced to en- dure as chairman.”

Cash to spend COUNCILLORS were asked to make suggestions for spending the £750 agreed by the county council to compensate the parish council for uprooting its trees on the bank on Farleigh Hill when it widened the road. Some members said they would like to see it spent on new trees or landscaping. Ideas were due to be put to the De-
