HOMEOWNERS in Barming are next in line for water meters as South East Water rolls out its customer metering programme to the rest of Maidstone. Meters have already been fit-
ted at properties in Laddingford and Yalding, with plans to fit 23,000 more homeswith meters over the next two years. Currently, 60% of homes in Maidstone have a meter and by 2020 this is expected to rise to at least 90%. South East Water says meters
are an important part of its long- term plan to manage future re- sources. The south east is
classed “an area of serious water stress” and research shows that homes on meters use up to 10% less water. The com- pany says meters give residents greater control over what they use and, therefore, what they pay for. Charles Healey, metering manager at South East Water, said: “Watermeters also help us detect leaks and encourage cus- tomers to think about their water use and behaviour.” More information about me-
tering and support can be found
atwww.southeastwater.co.uk or by calling 0333 000 0003.

South EastWater will notify the bill payer, where possible, ahead ofwork, and landlords where the information is available. Meters are fitted near external stop taps, so access to properties is not usually needed. If it is, an appointment will ALWAYS be booked with the customer. Those living in houses with a sharedwater supply, such as blocks of flats, will not be able to have meters fitted.
