Four facing murder charge


FOUR Lithuanian men have ap- peared in court charged with the murder of an Italian waiter who died following an attack at his bedsit in Maidstone. Aleksandras Zuravliovas (26),


of Beaumont Road, Maidstone; Tomas Gelezinis (30), of Lower Stone Street, Maidstone; Saulius Tamoliunas (23), of Union Street, Maidstone; and Linas Zidonis (21), of no fixed abode, are charged with the murder of Joele Leotta (20) late on October 20. Joele, who lived in Lower


Shop help plea HI KENT, the local charity for people with hearing loss, is looking for volunteers to help run its Christmas Shop inWeek Street, Maidstone. The shop will be open until Saturday, December 14, from 10am to 3pm, for six days a week. No experience is necessary.


Full training will be given, and a DBS criminal check will be necessary, and paid for by the charity.

Stone Street, above the Vesu- vius restaurant, where he was a waiter, was rushed to King’s College Hospital, London, fol- lowing the attack, but died later. Themen appeared at Medway Magistrates’ Court on October 24, where they were remanded in custody and appeared, via video link, before Maidstone Crown Court on October 28. The men are also charged


with grievous bodily harm in connection with an assault on a second victim Alex Galbiati. An inquest into the death of


Mr Leotta, opened and ad- journed at the Archbishop’s Palace, heard the victim died from head injuries after a group of men from a neighbouring flat broke down his door and as- saulted him and his flat mate. Police initially arrested 10


men in connection with the in- cident and Mr Leotta’s family flew to England from Italy to identify his body. The family, along with Mr Galbiati, who was taken to hos- pital following the incident, have now returned to Italy.

Christmas art show A RANGE of affordable art- works will be for sale at a Christmas exhibition. The event, organised by Maidstone Visual Artists’ Net- work, is at Maidstone Museum Café Gallery until November 30.

Pat hands over


charity reins AFTER a decade helping the elderly, Pat Thomas is looking for a new challenge. The chairman


of Age UK – the charity formed from Help the Aged and Age Concern – says after eight years in the chair, it’s time for new blood. Mrs Thomas said: “I’ve loved


my time with Age UK, but fresh ideas will take the organisation forward.” Her husband – also Pat – took


on the job as treasurer. She has seen the organisation’s turnover rise from £230,000 to over amil- lion in her time at the helm. Her proudest moment was opening the charity’s dementia unit, the Goodman Centre, in Egremont Road, Bearsted. AgeUKruns 13 day centres in Maidstone and provides the eld- erly with services including foot care, home bathing and com- puter courses. Mr andMrs Thomas,who live


in Abingdon Road, Barming, will continue their work for Ro- tary and the Freemasons. The husband and wife team handed over the Age UK mantel to BrianVyzzard (chairman) and his wife Carol (treasurer) at the charity’s AGM in October.
