UL receives EN71-3 testing accreditation

The changes refl ect the latest scientifi c knowledge and include

restrictions on toxic elements, certain allergenic fragrance compounds and use of CMR (carcinogenic, mutagenic and toxic for reproduction) chemicals. The company’s laboratories have actively participated in European working groups on toy safety and have been instrumental in developing the new EN71-3 standard. The group recently relocated to a brand new purpose built, state-of-the-art laboratory in Winnersh, Berkshire. Josh Warren, general manager, said: “The new site allows continued expansion of UL’s capabilities to support clients’ evolving needs for chemical management services. It also demonstrates UL’s continued investment in the UK and has enabled us to develop a high quality working environment that not only meets our business needs but also refl ects our brand and corporate aspirations.”

UL has announced that its new UK Chemical Centre of Excellence based in Winnersh, Berkshire, is now accredited to provide testing solutions to help assess product compliance under the new EN71- 3 chemical requirements of the EU Toy Safety Directive (2009/48/ EC).

Star Cutouts continues to release new characters in both its masks and cut-out ranges at a rapid pace, helped by its on-site manufacturing facilities. Ian Ravey, Star Cutouts’ managing director, told Toy

World that several new licences will be introduced into the range in the next month, including Harry Potter, The Hobbit, Doctor Who, and Planes. In the weeks following that, products for Scooby-Doo and Looney Tunes will also become available. Ian commented: “We are able to move very quickly

on turning ideas into products. Obviously we have to deal with the licensing approval process, but once that’s completed our in-house design teams and manufacturing takes over. A prime example of this speed is the picture of Kate and William and their new baby; the image was released to the world in the morning, and we were making our fi rst deliveries of the life-size cutout the next day.” Over the last few months, Star Cutouts announced extensions to its range including characters from The Simpsons, Monster’s University, and Superman and Batman, with multiple main and secondary characters available in each range. Ian commented: “I’d defi nitely put the launch of our Superman and Batman lines at the top of my list of highlights for the year. They are two excellent licences from Warner Bros., and are selling really well for us so far. 2013 has been a great year in general, and we’ve experienced month-on-month growth.” The company has also seen success with Mike and Sulley from Monster’s University masks and a wider range of their monster friends. Point of sale solutions are available from Star Cutouts for both masks and cut-outs. All of the new characters are available on Star Cutouts’ new trade website www.starcutouts.com, where retailers can download the new catalogue and make orders online.
