571 A Tottenham Hotspur White Hart Lane sign: “Spurs Development Society No.2”, in iron and wood, arches top, obverse with the THFC cockerel and above inscription, the reverse with the Spurs crest and motto, 120 by 88cm., 47 by 34 1/2in.


The sign features the design of the Tottenham Hotspur club crest in used between 1956 and 1983. During this period it featured a heraldic shield featuring a number of local landmarks and associations and the Latin motto Audere Est Facere. The lions flanking the shield came from the Northumberland family crest (of which Harry Hotspur was a member). The castle is Bruce Castle, 400 yards from the ground. The trees are the Seven Sisters. The back of the sign features the Tottenham cockerel and has the inscriptions ‘Tottenham Development Society’ and ‘Goal Time’.


Andy Porter (the Club Historian) has confirmed that the sign was part of the ground fixtures during the period from 1964 until 1980. He also gave us this info:


‘During season 1963-64 the club introduced the THFC Development Association under the Small Lotteries Act. Within a few weeks it reached the permitted number of tickets to be sold and the following season a second Improvement Scheme was introduced. From then, through to 1981, the Spurs Development Societies sold various lottery tickets, golden goal tickets, daily/weekly draw tickets etc. - Fenners will remember the Herald listing the winners each week! Before the current west stand was built, there used to be several club office buildings adjacent to the Red House along what is now Bill Nicholson Way. One of those was the Spurs Pools office, outside which this sign would have hung.’ £2,000 - 3,000
