The agenda on the second day includes three tracks that will offer attendees the opportunity to participate in a varied slate of sessions offered throughout the day. ASC revenue cycle expert Rebec- ca Overton, director of revenue cycle management for Surgical Management Professionals LLC, will present a full- day track dedicated to various specialty- specific coding guidelines for ophthal- mology, gastrointestinal (GI), ear, nose and throat (ENT), urology; gynecology and general surgery/integumentary. The most up-to-date coding directives and tips will be provided during these ses- sions to include documentation chal- lenges that impact reporting and ulti- mately an ASC’s bottom-line. Attendees will learn best practices

to avoid inappropriate reporting of a screening colonoscopy when a diag- nostic colonoscopy is indicated, the inappropriate down-coding of lesion

Saturday

On the final day of the program, attendees can elect to participate in several ses- sions from either the ICD-10-CM con- ventions/specialty coding track or the Anatomy & Physiology track. Attend- ees who want to immerse themselves in Anatomy & Physiology will have the option of attending the entire track in lieu of the ICD-10-CM track. Angela Talton, senior vice president of coding for National Medical Billing Services and Denis Rodriguez, senior ASC coder and compliance auditor for The Coding Network LLC, will lead the way in navi- gating the functions of common body systems seen in the ASC setting. Joanne Schade-Boyce, director of education & curriculum for Health Rev- enue Assurance Associates will guide at- tendees through a full day of ICD-10-CM conventions and the basics of applying the new system in the top 10 most com-

removals when sizes are not speci- fied simply to get claims out the door and when to query a physician about ambiguous documentation. ENT ses- sions will include tips for ensuring that appropriate sequencing and re- imbursements are made for multiple ENT procedures performed during the same session. Back by popular demand, nation-

ally recognized health care consultant Margie Scalley Vaught will lead a second track dedicated to orthopedic procedures ranging from shoulders to toes. With hip, shoulder and knee pro- cedures topping the list of inaccurate reporting from an ASC audit perspec- tive, these sessions are a must-attend for ASC facilities that perform heavy orthopedic volume. New this year is an afternoon track

geared toward the specialty of pain management with a focus on tradi- tional injection issues and neurostim- ulator reporting. Led by top pain man-

mon ASC specialties. The discussion will include examples found in the ICD-10- CM manual. Those who attend this track should already have a working knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy & physiology and a basic understanding of ICD-10-CM.

The ICD-10-CM specialty sessions

will incorporate operative report exam- ples with an emphasis on documentation deficiencies as seen with the application of ICD-10-CM guidelines. If they haven’t started already, facili- ties need to assess their operative docu- mentation to determine whether that documentation is specific enough to as- sign a code in ICD-10-CM. Documenta- tion lacking the specific documentation required for accurate and precise code se- lection will need to be clarified (queried) for additional information.

FEATURE

agement coding and reimbursement expert Marvel Hammer, president of MJH Consulting, this track will en- sure that ASC facilities are reporting accurately and receiving optimum re- imbursement.

Physicians must be made aware of any documentation deficiencies or discrepan- cies so that going forward, they can docu- ment to meet the requirements of ICD-10- CM. It is imperative that physicians are aware of the detail required in their docu- mentation to give coders the information that they need to select the more specific ICD-10-CM codes. Will an ICD-9-CM code considered

medically necessary under a state local coverage determination policy continue to be reimbursed when mapped to a corresponding ICD-10-CM after Octo- ber 2014? Will ICD-10-CM continue to support NOS (Not Otherwise Specified) codes in the upcoming years? These ques- tions and many more will be discussed.
