We have developed this guide to support you in laying the foundations of good communication skills. By


working with I CAN and using guidance from the EYFS we have been able to put together a comprehensive range of resources and specialist advice to assist you in early language development.


To help you we’ve divided the guide into 4 key areas, Listening and Attention, Understanding, Speaking andSocial Development. It is designed to support you in your goal to develop strong communication skills from birth through to five and we’ve aligned it to the EYFS progress check.

Kate Freeman Kate is a lead I CAN Communication Advisor specialising in early years speech and language development (from birth to five). Kate is a qualified Speech and Language Therapist with over twenty years experience in the field of paediatrics. She carries out training courses for teachers, SENCOs, speech and language therapists and a wealth of other professionals and parents as part of I CAN’s programmes.


Kate joined I CAN in June 1999 and has been involved in supporting the development of services for children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN). Her current focus is leading the national Early Language Development Programme and a programme developing Communication Ambassadors.
