WHAT’S NEW IHC WINCHES PRESENTS IDSIS: 50 TON FIBER ROPE TRACTION WINCH


IHC Winches, part of IHC Merwede, has offi cially presented its 50-ton fi ber rope traction winch, known as IDsis, to the Dutch and Belgian off shore markets. The presentation earlier this year was attended by a large group of lifting specialists, who responded enthusiastically to the prototype and the results of its initial tests.


WHAT’S NEW NEW LEEA TRAINING COURSE OFFERS AN INTRO TO OVERHEAD LIFTING


The LEEA (Lifting Equipment Engineers Association) is launching a new one-day training course designed to off er staff with little or no technical expertise an introduction to the overhead lifting sector. Led by the LEEA’s team of specialist trainers, the Lifi ng Equipment Familiarization Seminar will provide attendees with an overview of commonly used lifting equipment and accessories, and an outline of relevant UK legislation and regulations.


Open to all employees of LEEA member companies, the new course is ideally suited to staff working in administrative roles who would benefi t from a better understanding of the products and services they deal with. For the more technically oriented, the course may also serve as the fi rst step towards a long-term career in the test, examination and maintenance of overhead lifting equipment, via the LEEA’s industry-recognized Diploma training and qualifi cation program.


The new Lifting Equipment Familiarization Seminar can be held at the LEEA’s purpose-designed training centre in Huntingdon, or any suitable premises worldwide. The association’s facilities incorporate a wide range of operational lifting equipment in a modern workshop environment, alongside dedicated classroom space kitted out with the latest AV technology. The name IDsis is an abbreviation of IHC Deep-sea installation system which is a dedicated deployment system for handling fi ber rope, developed to overcome the restrictions of using conventional steel and synthetic wires. Steel is durable but heavy, which limits its usage in deeper water. Currently used synthetics are light, but low-heat resistance and high-creep properties limit their application on large winches. The rope is designed for critical deepwater applications, such as deep-sea installation, abandonment and recovery (A&R) and off shore mining operations.


The development of IDsis has resulted in the combination of: a traction winch, which reduces wear of the composite cable for the given load situations; and a storage winch, which is capable of reeling large amounts of fi ber rope. Both are combined with an intermediate tensioner for safe and reliable operation in the off shore environment.


Following the successful completion of the Factory Acceptance Test, the new deep-sea installation system will be tested in operational circumstances in the North Sea later this year. This will take place in association with Seaway Heavy Lifting on one of its off shore vessels.


The Dutch Maritime Innovation Program has funded the development of the IDsis deployment system. This R&D project is executed in conjunction with such companies as Bexco, Seaway Heavy Lifting and Reden, which joined forces with IHC Winches to combine their various areas of expertise, such as winch and fi ber rope technology, rope construction, operational off shore knowledge, modelling, simulation and legislation. y
