Broke of the Shannon
In conjunction with an international symposium on 12 October (see below), this year’s President’s Event will celebrate OIs Philip Broke and his brother Charles (Wellington’s Adjutant-General at the Battle of Waterloo) with a concert at their home church of Nacton on Sunday 13th October.
OI President Richard Wilson will be joined by Radio 3 presenter Louise Fryer, a choir, orchestra and soloists under the direction of Andrew Leach to tell their stories using contemporary words and music including songs, Beethoven’s extraordinary Wellington’s Victory at the Battle of Vittoria and Haydn’s Mass in Time of War.
The OI Club is in the process of setting up an OI choir, and if you would like to sing in the Haydn Mass at this concert (and at the rehearsal at 11am on the day) please contact Lindy Hacker as soon as possible by email (
lxh@ipswich.suffolk.sch.uk) or telephone (01473 298961).
Tickets for the concert are priced at £10 and are available from Lindy Hacker in the Development Office. (Address details in

Broke of the Shannon and the
War of 1812 We all know the name Broke without perhaps knowing why. Captain (later Admiral) Philip Broke became a famous hero after the battle between HMS Shannon and USS Chesapeake on 1 June 1813 which changed the course of British naval gunnery.
Two hundred years later all will be revealed in this new hardback book and at a celebratory weekend in Ipswich on 12 and 13 October 2013. Broke of the Shannon and the War of 1812 addresses many aspects of Broke’s life and legacy through articles by a variety of authors including noted naval historians from both sides of the Atlantic, the gunnery expert who directed the gunfire on the film Master and Commander, and two members of the OI Club, Richard Wilson and Dr John Blatchly (who writes about Broke’s time at the School). Many of these authors will also appear at the Broke International Symposium to be held at UCS Waterfront on Saturday 12 October from 10.30 to 5.30. The price of the Symposium is £35 (£30 if you book before 31 July) which includes a buffet lunch and light refreshments. Places are limited, so to book (quoting “OI 1813”) write to Fraser Yates, 309 Norwich Road, Ipswich, IP1 4BW or email bookings@ipswichmaritimetrust.
