OI reunion at Chelmsford Sunday 16th June
OI Annual Dinner Speaker Announced …
We are very pleased to welcome Tom Stevenson (‘72-’81) as Guest Speaker at our Ipswich Dinner this year. Tom tells us that he has spent most of the time since he left Ipswich as a journalist on a variety of national newspapers. He is currently “a columnist on the Sunday Telegraph for fun and Head of Communications at the City fund management fi rm Fidelity to pay the school fees.”
Tom’s father David Stevenson taught maths at the School for many years and will be remembered by OIs of the 70s and 80s.
Thirty-four OIs, parents, staff, former staff and guests went to Essex County Ground to enjoy the Essex Eagles v Lancashire Lightning match. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality box to watch Essex take on Lancashire in a Pro40 game. Unfortunately, as is becoming a recurring theme, Essex lost on the day by 34 runs, but a wonderful day was had by all who attended.

Drinks in the City Friday 22nd March 2013
On Friday 17th May the Function Room at the Ipswich Sports Club was once again the venue for a reunion of those who left the school between 1958 and 1963. Conversation fl owed freely over pre-lunch drinks as 25 OIs and wives renewed acquaintance, in some cases for the fi rst time in many years.
After an excellent lunch, guests were taken by minibus to the Holly Road pavilion, from where they were given a tour of the School by senior pupils. The tour guides from the Lower Sixth were perfect ambassadors for the present day Ipswich School. At least one OI had not seen the school for 50 years, but was relieved to see that it was still recognisable!
The 50th-55th Reunion traditionally takes place on Speech Day/ Sports Day, so the activities on the School Field and exhibitions of pupils’ work in classrooms and laboratories provided much of interest to the visitors. The focus of the traditional visit to the Archives was a special display of artefacts relating to the capture of USS Chesapeake by Captain (later Admiral) Philip Broke OI during the War of 1812.
The day concluded with tea in the pavilion, where the group was joined by several other OIs, who had attended Speech Day and the sports as parents or guests.
Leigh Belcham Old Ipswichian News
The latest OI “Drinks in the City” took place in March, with a very well attended return to the Old Tea Warehouse in the heart of the square mile. As ever, it was a pleasure to see a number of new faces at the drinks, young and old, and of course there were also those who have made this a “must attend” event.
The London drinks are going from strength to strength. Now three years old, we have tried various venues and different months to see which is most popular. The next event is likely to be in September, and we are enjoying exploring suitable venues.
