WelCome To The 2013 Targa neWfoundland! (Above) targa newfoundland is a photographer’s dream. (bottom) targa newfoundland President robert Giannou.

A

very hearty welcome to the 12th year of targa newfoundland! the event, over the past 12 years, has matured and become

much more streamlined, and we look forward to many more new innovations in the coming years. the focus of this year will be the same as that of past years – to increase the level of community and volunteer safety. to that end, we have put into place an entirely

new safety plan for each community which will raise the level of safety yet again. this new system, when it is set up by community

volunteers, will be supervised and audited by a group of eight safety audit course cars staffed by trained and certified crews. these two factors, when combined, will ensure that we all will have a safer and more fun event. I have to publically thank the event’s board of

Governors. these people; Ms. Janet brake of Gan- der, newfoundland; Mr. bill Langdon of St. John’s, newfoundland; Mr. doug Mepham of belleville, on- tario; Mr. nick Pearson of St. John’s, newfoundland; and Mr. Mark williams of Maryland, uSA, have each, in their own way, provided significant assis- tance and guidance throughout the year. they and our department heads have made this

event possible. not only is targa newfoundland a competition, it is pure entertainment of the finest order. It is also a credit to all of the communities and their volunteers who host the stages. to run a ten day event (includes the two day mo-

torsport school) to the exact schedule that is re- quired, is no small achievement. In fact, it is quite remarkable. what is even more remarkable is that the event annually created some $6.5M dollars of economic activity and provided some $7M of adver- tising value for the province (Mun Study). In addi- tion, a recent study done for the province, showed that the event annually contributes $2.4M dollars to the province’s Gross domestic Product, while providing significant job equivalents and other com- munity benefits. this year, to attract a broader range of competi-

tors and sponsors alike, we set in place a major long term marketing strategy. we decided that there is strength in partnerships and created co-

marketing arrangements with Inside track Maga- zine (Canada’s source for motorsport news), the Canadian Motorsport expo (held annually in toronto during february), and the annual yorkville/bloor ex- otic Car Show (held in June in downtown toronto). the magazine and each of these events has a

very significant footprint and gains targa newfound- land exposure to hundreds of thousands of competi- tors, sponsors, and fans. In a very measurable way, this has increased targa’s visibility in Canada’s most significant marketplace. we thank the communities of the Kittiwake

Coast for their eleven years of loyalty to the event, we enjoyed our time there. but, we decided to move one day of the event to the bonavista peninsula. So in 2013, we welcome the new communities of the south bonavista Peninsula; Lethbridge, brooklyn, trinity, Port rexton, the bonaventures (including dunfield and trouty). So once again, it is a new event and a new com-

petition. on behalf of the board of Governors our thanks go out to all of our sponsors, and we wish the best of luck to the competitors who are taking up the challenge this our twelfth year. Good luck and good competition. •
