Boat bits recovered in Romania Farleigh’s WI wish
BITS of boats stolen from the Hampstead Marina in Yalding have been recovered – in Roma- nia!
Although CCTV is helping
police track down petty thieves and burglars breaking into sheds and outbuildings, the long arm of the law has been reaching out from Kent as far as eastern Europe. PCSO Nicola Morris told the annual meeting of Yalding Parish Council that there had been a decrease of 5.5% in crime across Marden and Yald-
ing in the past 12 months, with criminal damage down by 17%. Break ins to sheds and garages
were down by8%and theft was down by 24%. She told the meeting: “Nu- merous arrests have been made locally in relation to various of- fences including burglary and for the series of shed breaks.” She said several arrests had
also been made in connection with thefts from boats at the Yalding Marinas, with parts being recovered from Romania. The police are now working

with British Transport Police to look out for people who use local stations to commit crime in the surrounding towns. She said that CCTV had been
used to good effect, particularly in Medway Avenue where it had helped to deter repeat of- fenders and help residents feel more secure. The parish council has now purchased its own CCTV cam- erawhich can bemoved around the village and PCSO Morris said: “Intelligence has been gained from this.”
Leylandiis offer ‘no visual benefit’
VALERIE Brown has applied to fell six leylandii trees in South Lodge, Church Green, Marden. The trees are adjacent to
the western boundary. The scheme also includes the removal of a dead silver birch tree in the rear garden together with pollarding and general maintenance of poplars in this area. Her application form says
the leylandii trees offer “no visual benefit to conservation area”.
Maidstone Council will determine the planning appli- cation.
ONE Kent WI has thrown out the rule book when it comes to women’s rights. The Farleighs WI now wel- comes men into its fold – but only when there are five Wednesdays in the month, The Farleighs WI, which
meets in the WI Hall in Forge Lane, East Farleigh, has more than 65 female members – some retired, some new to the area, some widowed – who all enjoy their monthly meet- ings, visiting speakers and trips out.
But, members recognise that
not all events would be possi- blewithout the support of their spouses – or ‘supportive hus- bands.’ So now, catering for partners
who have been heard to say: “We wish we could come!” the WI opens its doors to just those men.
When the month contains a
fifth Wednesday – as it did in May – the meeting is open to husbands, partners – indeed, anyone – who wants to go along.
President Helen Swan said:
“Weliketothinkweareabit progressive – so now, we have WISH meetings for WI Sup- portive Husbands. The WI long since stopped being about just jam and Jerusalem. The May talk was on smuggling!”
