Improved park revealed
THE second phase of an ambi- tious plan to revive the Cobtree Manor Park was officially un- veiled by Maidstone MP Helen Grant and Cllr John Wilson, chairman of the Cobtree Manor Estate Charity Committee. The Cobtree Manor Park Proj-
ect aims to encourage greater public use of the park, be- queathed to the people of the town by 12-times Mayor of Maidstone Sir Garrard Tyrwhitt Drake, by providing facilities for all the family. The first phase of the project
was completed last summer and featured the installation of out- lying play equipment, which has already proved extremely popular. Phase two includes a new

Gym call for longer hours ANTHONY Hayes says his gym inHeadcornmay struggle to survive unless it can open longer. Earlier this year he was granted planning per- mission to convert a vacant industrial unit into a gym at Waycon Builders’ Yard, North Street on condition that the opening hours were restricted to 9.30am-7pm Monday to Saturday and 9am- 5pm on Sundays and bank holidays. He says this restriction would affect the viabil-
ity of the business and wants to open from 7am- 10pm on weekdays. Maidstone Council will decide whether to
grant his planning application and vary the con- dition it imposed.
sign stage, will feature a new sculpture trail by local artist Jason Mulligan, and a new visi- tor centre and café. CllrWilson said: “The opening
of this latest phase of the Cobtree Manor Park project is a flagship event for Maidstone. The facili- ties we are offering to all family members are on a par with the best you will find anywhere.”

Gypsy can stay on site A GYPSY has finally been given planning per- mission for legal residence at a site in Headcorn. Kay Dignam had lived at Oak Tree Farm in Lenham Road despite being refused planning per- mission in 2005 and 2009 to site two mobile homes for residential use and a touring caravan. Cllr Richard Thick, wardmember for Headcorn,
was unhappy that Maidstone Council officers had now recommended that she should be allowed to remain there with her family. He said: “There has been no change in eight
years, butwe have just said, ‘let’s give in to them’.” Officers said the site was no less intrusive than
other gypsy camps along Lenham Road, so there would be no grounds for refusal.
