University of Missouri College Students Spend Spring Break at Colorado BLM Many students spend their spring breaks having wild party times
on sunny beaches. But there are others who instead donate their time to community service. In March, 10 students from the University of Missouri and two site leaders came to public lands in southwest Colorado. For more than a decade, San Juan Mountains Association, a nonprofi t partner with the BLM and the Forest Service on San Juan public lands, has organized work projects that always include one day at the Spring Creek Basin Herd Management Area. T is year, students worked two days in the wild horse area. Joining them were volunteers from the Mesa Verde and Four Corners Back Country Horsemen and the Colorado chapter of the National Mustang Association. Volunteers rebuilt a section of the fence that had been vandalized. T ey installed braces, tightened wire and replaced other wire sections. Following wildlife-friendly strand spacing, the top wire was smooth
twisted 42 inches above the ground. T e middle strands were barbed wire. T is type of fencing allows deer and elk to jump over it, fawns and calves can crawl under and cat le will, hopefully, respect it.
OETRA Promotes Trails and Club at Equine Rescue Trainers Challenge
Looking for additional opportunities to promote your trail organi-
zation? Host a booth at horse-related events. In May, members of the Oklahoma Equestrian Trail Riders Association, Inc. (OETR ) hosted a booth at a horse rescue’s trainers challenge event. T e rescue, Blazes Tribute Equine Rescue located in Jones, Oklahoma, for three years has invited horse trainers to select from their adoptable horses, put 100 days of training on them and then hold a competition aſt er which the horses are adopted out. OETR members provided maps for state equestrian trails, gave out club newslet ers and off ered a membership special with prize drawings. OETR also hosts a yearly membership contest and the prizes include two nights of equestrian camping donating by Oklahoma, Missouri and Texas horse camping facilities. Members who recruit a new member are eligible and new members are also eligible to win prizes. For the last two years since the recruitment contest began, almost 80 new members have joined the club.
