Lower emission driving and London congestion charge free until 2016
Thames Valley businesses looking to drive down the cost of motoring need to look at lower CO2-emitting vehicles especially if London driving is undertaken regularly as certain models will be congestion charge free until 2016 – if registered on time
There are several considerations when it comes to choosing the most cost-effective company car from monthly payments to Benefit in Kind (BIK) and other tax implications, referred to together as whole life costs. Generally, the lower the vehicle’s emissions the lower the BIK whilst these cars also tend to be more fuel efficient. Some factors may not be expensive in isolation but as part of the overall picture have a bearing on the cost of running a particular company car.
Currently in the spotlight is the London congestion charge which changes its regulations on July 1 when the Greener Vehicle Discount (GVD) is replaced by the Ultra Low Emission Discount (ULED). However, Transport for London (TfL) has announced a ‘sunset’ period of three years for vehicles registered for GVD by June 28, 2013.
Businesses considering funding a new vehicle can take advantage of the ‘sunset’ period which will help reduce motoring costs for those
who venture into the capital but only if they’re quick. Under the current GVD, vehicles emitting less than 100g/km and, as long as the vehicle is registered on time with TfL, will continue to be exempt from the charge until 2016. Once the ULED comes into force, only vehicles emitting less than 75g/km will qualify for the 100% discount.
