Primary school told it needs to improve
COXHEATHPrimary School has been judged to be in need of im- provement after Ofsted inspec- tors carried out an assessment. Inspectors were critical of the quality of teaching, achieve- ments of pupils and leadership andmanagement at the Stockett Lane school, and gave it a grade 3.
They observed 17 lessons and
met with pupils, school leaders, governors and a local authority representative and also took par- ents’ views into account. The inspectors’ report said:
“The quality of teaching requires improvement. It is not consis- tently good enough to support good achievement, particularly in writing.” Lesson planning was de- scribed as “not always thorough enough” to cater for differing ability levels and marking of work failed to give clear guide- lines for improvement. In addition pupils’ work was
also affected by extended staff absences. But inspectors praised the
good progressmade by children in reception class and rapid progress made by pupils in years 5 and 6. Reading is a strength of the school and inspectors said it was taught well, with pupils being able to cope with unfamiliar texts. The behaviour and safety of pupils was judged to be good and pupils were said to enjoy school and feel safe there. School leaders were aware of
areas of difficulty and were ad- dressing them, including ap- pointing an effective subject leader to bring improvements to handwriting. The inspectors carried out
their assessment from February 28 to March 1. KCCwas unavailable for com-
ment at the time of going to press.

PRE-school pupils in Yalding are learning about life in developing coun- tries and helping children in Africa enjoy a better standard of life. Three children under five die
every minute because of poor sanitation and dirty water – that’s nearly 5,000 children every day. Now, the Twyford Pre-School,
whichmeets at the village hall, is the latest village group to go in for ‘toilet twinning,’ an enterpris- ing charity venture which helps improve sanitation and hygiene in less affluent societies. The pre-school has paid£60to
twin its loos with a toilet in Farchana,Chad, Africa, while the church supports a latrine in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Toilet Twinning was set up by
twoUK-basedcharities, Cordand Tearfund. They will use the money raised to provide better sanitation, cleanwater and hygiene education. Sally Wilson, who set the ballcock rolling in the village, said: “Toilet twinning is a newconcept to support third-world countries where clean, safesanitation isaluxury. It isarelatively inexpensiveway of tackling the horrendous lack of decent sanitation around theworld.” For further information about how to engage in Toilet Twinning, visit
