University of Maryland Equine Educational Events

T ere are a lot of exciting things happening in the University of Maryland Equine Extension programs this year including its annual Pasture Walks at the Equine Rotational Grazing Demonstration Site in Clarksville. T ese walks are free of charge but registration is required. T e fi rst one of the season will be on May 23 from 6-8 p.m. with the focus being on how to utilize pasture to reduce hay costs. To register, contact Jen Reynolds at jenreyn@umd.edu or 301-405-1547. T e Horse Outreach Workgroup has put together some great tips in reguards to pasture management. T e workgroup consists of representatives from local Soil Conservation Districts, Maryland Department of Agriculture, Natural Resource Conservation Service,

University of Maryland, Delaware Cooperative Extension, and the Maryland Horse Council. T e Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Offi ce of Resource Conservation provides coordination for the workgroup. For the month of May, tips include the folllowing: • Mow recently grazed pastures to no lower than 4 inches to maintain vegetative growth and to control weeds before they go to seed. • Apply another 1/3 of the recommended annual fertilizer application to pastures. • Delay grazing fertilized or limed pasture until after about 0.25 inch of rainfall has fallen.

• Evaluate soil erosion in sacrifi ce lot/heavy use area and other heavy use areas (gates, feeders, run-in sheds, waterers). Contact your local soil conservation district for assistance with soil erosion control measures.
