MORE than 500 YFC members travelled to the Royal Welsh Showground on Sunday, April 7th to take part in the Wales YFC

attended to takepart in the Welsh and English public speaking finals,having been granted an extrafortnight’spractice after the original finals daywas postponed due to severe weather. Aled Johnson, chairman of the
Wales YFC activities and inter- national committee said that once again the public speaking finals day–one of the most pop- ular competitions held by Wales YFC –maintained its high stan- dards. He said: “Public speaking is a
talent thatcannot be taught. It is something which has to be nur- tured over anumber of years.I honestlybelieve thatWales YFC produces some of the best speak- ers in the country,and thatwith- out the encouragement of clubs, club leaders and fellowmembers, manysimplywouldn’t get the opportunity to feel the buzz of competing in such an event.” Following afull dayofcompe-
tition, therewas awest Walian clean sweep in the overall stand- ings,with the Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion federations named joint overall winners of the Welsh section, while neigh- bouring county Pembrokeshire

took the honours in the English section. Carmarthenshireand
Ceredigion had alreadytied for first place in the Welsh senior debating competition, with Carmarthenshirealso picking up wins in the junior speaking and intermediate brainstrust sections. Pembrokeshirewon the Welsh
junior reading competition, afeat they went on to repeatinthe English section of the competi- tion. Pembrokeshirealso picked up
awin in the English senior after- dinner competition, while the junior speaking waswon by Brecknock, with Ceredigion win- ning the intermediate brainstrust competition. Therewas greatsuccess for
Ceredigion in other competitions thattook place during the day, as the county federation wonthe Welsh quiz, cubed exhibit and sit- uations vacant competition through Catrin Reynolds. Pembrokeshirealso took home
the English quiz trophyand won the cheerleading competition. They will be joined by Montgomery as Wales YFC’s representativesatthe NFYFC national cheerleading final in Blackpool at the NFYFC agm. The winning team in each of
the English public speaking com- petitions will nowgoontorepre- sent Wales YFC at the national public speaking finals in Stafford in July.
