A warm Aberdeen welcome Lord Provost George Adam, Lord Provost of the City of Aberdeen Energy, marine expertise and innovation are historically

embedded in the roots of Aberdeen. So naturally, the region takes great pride in its continued role as the home of the All-Energy exhibition and conference - the UK’s largest renewable energy trade show - since its inception in 2001. All- Energy has grown significantly year on year and attracts thousands of business visitors from across the UK and overseas, which we are delighted to receive in the city.

The All-Energy success story is reflected throughout the renewables industry and here in Aberdeen City and Shire we are seeing some major achievements and developments being made across a range of alternative energy sectors.

By capitalising on its oil and gas expertise and tenacity for enterprise, the region is fast diversifying its sustainable energy credentials by becoming a leading force in renewables from offshore and onshore wind to biomass and hydrogen fuel cell transport.

The region’s capabilities will be showcased in the Aberdeen City and Shire pavilion at All-Energy, organised by Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG). AREG and its members will also be sharing their renewables’ experience in the conference programme.

This year’s All-Energy is once again expected to outshine previous shows and I look forward to learning about the latest industry developments and advancements. On behalf of the Council and citizens of Aberdeen, I would like to say what a privilege it is to welcome the event and its visitors to our city. I wish you a very successful conference and exhibition and a very pleasurable stay in Aberdeen.

A crucial time for the renewables industry Maria McCaffery MBE, Chief Executive, RenewableUK This year, we are

gathering in Aberdeen for All-Energy 2013 at a

crucial time for the renewables sector. The Energy Bill, the most important piece of legislation of its kind for decades, is making its way through Parliament. We are all keeping a watchful eye on its progress and making our views known. The Bill must provide the right level of support if we are to continue to flourish. The industry needs clarity on this as soon as possible to reassure developers and investors.

Wind has continued to set a number of new records in the last few months. Figures released recently show that, in 2012, wind output increased by 33%, generating 5.5% of the UK’s electricity needs, up from 4% in 2011. If Government creates the right framework, wind could be generating 20% of our requirements by 2020.

In February, at RenewableUK’s Wave and Tidal Conference in London, we heard a number of funding announcements from the UK and Scottish Governments and witnessed the signing of an agreement for our Marine Energy Parks to work closer together. Although the marine sector faces a number of challenges, the signals from Holyrood and Westminster remain positive.

I am greatly looking forward to hearing from friends and colleagues in the speeches and debates at this key event in the energy sector’s calendar. All-Energy gives us a superb opportunity to share innovative ideas on the roles we can all play in diversifying the UK’s energy mix.

Reflecting on great strides made Niall Stuart, Chief Executive of Scottish Renewables

All-Energy is the one of the best opportunities for the renewables industry to reflect on the great

strides we have made in the last year and to focus on those issues that really matter for 2013.

This year, Scotland’s renewable energy story is about the major steps forward we have made in delivering tangible benefits to the economy, the environment and to thousands of people across the country.

Scottish Renewables also played a crucial role in publishing a broad range of statistics and reports to highlight the positive impact the industry is having. We produced the first ever study of employment in the renewables sector in Scotland, which showed the industry supports more than 11,000 jobs across the country. An update to this report will be published soon. We also published figures that showed, in the first six months of 2012, that the industry had secured some £1bn worth of capital investment – there are few industries in Scotland that can boast such success during a time of economic difficulty!

Where there is opportunity there are of course challenges too. The publication of the UK Government’s Energy Bill has once again sharpened our resolve to work for the best possible fiscal, financial and regulatory framework to support the continued development of renewable energy.

There is rarely a dull moment in Scottish renewables and All-Energy will be a great chance for the industry to get together and discuss the road ahead.

Aberdeen’s significant role in the sustainable energy revolution

Morag McCorkindale, Chief Operating Officer, Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG)

Since the first All-Energy, back in 2001, AREG has

worked closely alongside the show organisers to help promote the event to the wider energy industry supply chain and to establish strong international links. Now the largest event of its kind in the UK, we are proud to continue our association, and that the event continues to be held here in Aberdeen – the UK’s Energy City.

Aberdeen is playing a significant part in the sustainable energy revolution, and its leading role will be underpinned at All-Energy, where the Aberdeen City and Shire regional pavilion will showcase more than fifty local businesses active across all sectors. AREG will also be profiling its members’ wider capabilities as well as projects which are central to Scottish, UK and European efforts to build a sustainable renewables industry, including the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre (EOWDC) - a joint venture between AREG and Vattenfall, along with consortium partner, Technip.

The EOWDC is considered a major catalyst in accelerating offshore wind development, and will deliver more than £230 million worth of investment in Scottish renewables infrastructure.

Another ground-breaking development is the £25 million Aberdeen Hydrogen Project which will see cutting-edge technology installed for a range of the city’s energy needs, including Europe’s largest fleet of ten hydrogen buses.

On the eve of All-Energy, AREG will welcome delegates to its annual International Trade Reception, a key mechanism for business networking with inward delegations.

We will continue to work closely with our partners and stakeholders, including the two local councils, Scottish Enterprise, Scottish Renewables, East Coast Renewables and others, to build on the industry’s encouraging momentum for All-Energy 2013 and beyond.

All-Energy offers the UK the opportunity to shine Simon Carter, Head Strategic Trade – Renewables Team, UKTI With professional advisers both within the UK and across more than 100 international markets, UK Trade & Investment is the Government Department that helps UK-based companies succeed in the global economy, and assists overseas companies to bring their high-quality investment to the UK.

The Renewable Energy market around the world continues to grow, and All-Energy offers the UK the opportunity to shine. UKTI’s engagement with this show prioritises the international opportunities that exist for UK companies.

Our seminar programme in the Conference is focused on Marine Energy. “Opportunities in Offshore Wind in Northern Europe” (11am on Wed 22 May) will outline the increasing demand for products and services within the French and German markets. Our second seminar, “Marine Energy – What the competition are doing”, (at 10.30am on Thurs 23 May) will discuss the UK’s position as the foremost market for the development of marine energy solutions.

Looking forward, in 2013-14, UKTI will refresh its strategy for this sector - researching the opportunities for UK companies in solar energy, wind energy in Europe and North America, the potential growth of Latin American markets and smart grid opportunities for UK companies. Of course, the immediate need is business today, and UKTI will have a significant cadre of our overseas specialists at All-Energy who, in understanding their own markets, can offer valuable knowledge, contacts and opportunities to UK companies who engage in our one-to-one meeting programme. UKTI are at All-Energy to explore the opportunities of today and identify the opportunities of tomorrow. We look forward to meeting you.

SUT – All-Energy’s Learned Society Patron Bob Allwood, Chief Executive, Society for Underwater Technology The Society for Underwater Technology was founded in 1966 by a group of

enthusiastic individuals whose interests lay in the fields of scientific diving and technology to support underwater science. I imagine they had little idea about what was about to happen in the North Sea with respect to oil and gas exploration and production. What was to follow in this sector in other parts of the world, in water depths now exceeding 3000m, they would have regarded as science, or rather technology, fiction. At this time, the commercial harnessing of marine renewable energy would also have been viewed as technology fiction.

The Society, whose overarching aim is simply the furtherance and exchange of knowledge within and across its fields of interest, has found itself well placed to recognise, and assist with, the development of life-changing technologies. Indeed, the Society was involved in the early discussions that led to the setting up of this All-Energy event some 13 years ago. Once again, we are delighted and proud to be the Learned Society Patron for the event.

Energy supply rightly continues to remain high on the national agendas of many countries and it is therefore not surprising that All- Energy continues to grow. Taking advantage of the opportunities provided by high quality events such as All-Energy helps ensure that progress will be made in the quest for reliable, viable and sustainable alternative sources of energy. I do not doubt that we shall be welcoming more visitors to this year’s event than ever before.

Again this year, the Society’s Marine Renewable Energies Committee has assisted in the planning of the wave and tidal conference sessions. With more abstracts submitted this year than previously, this has been no easy task! Also, we shall once again be presenting the Lennard-Senior Prize to an individual for outstanding contribution to the marine renewables industry. I and my colleagues are sure that you will find All-Energy 2013 both rewarding and enjoyable. We very much look forward to welcoming you at any time during the event on our stand, number J131.
