Spotlight on UKTI’s plans at All-Energy 2013
UK Trade and Investment is the UK Government Department that helps UK-based companies succeed in the global economy and assists overseas companies to bring their high-quality investment to the UK. At All-Energy 2013, UKTI will offer one-to-one meetings between UK and overseas companies, designed to offer business potential for both.
UKTI specialists from 15 key overseas markets will be available to meet with and brief UK companies on opportunities in their home markets. UKTI will also feature in the Conference Programme, highlighting "Opportunities in Offshore Wind in Northern Europe“ and "Marine Energy - What the competition are doing".
Associated Events
The day before All-Energy opens, there are a number of associated events that take place at AECC. These include: • H2FC (Hydrogen and Fuel Cells) Supergen is a newly established initiative comprising leading UK academics, along with industrial partners, with the aim of establishing a connected, inclusive research infrastructure in the UK that will span the entire Hydrogen and Fuel Cell landscape. The group, led by Professor Nigel Brandon, plans to deliver two sessions around All-Energy, looking at areas including policy, hydrogen storage and infrastructure, and fuel cells. Also presented will be case studies of current Hydrogen and Fuel Cell technology. On Tuesday 21 May, H2FC Supergen will hold a day-long session at AECC in advance of All-Energy. Prospective registrants should email Dr Chloe Stockford
c.stockford@
imperial.ac.uk in order to register; and a second day-long session on 22 May, as part of All-Energy 2013, to which all visitors and exhibitors are welcome, without the need to register in advance.
• IMarEST Metocean Awareness Taster Session - 21 May For offshore industries, such as renewables and oil and gas, meteorological and oceanographic (metocean) conditions have a major impact on the design of facilities and their subsequent operations. Therefore, knowledge of wind, wave, current, water level and weather conditions at site-specific locations is essential to contribute to optimum design and efficient operations. Sound use of metocean data and information can assist with improved safety and reduced costs.
This Metocean Awareness Taster Session aims to provide attendees with an overview of metocean data, analyses, information and procedures, and serves as an introduction to the more detailed 3-day IMarEST Metocean Awareness Course. This session is relevant to project managers and engineers in the offshore renewables and oil and gas industries, involved in operations or design, from new entrants to the industry to those with many years’ experience, and will enable delegates to interact with experts in the field and other delegates from various backgrounds who use or provide metocean data.
The session will take place on Tuesday 21 May at the AECC in Aberdeen, starting with a networking lunch at 12:30 and finishing with a coffee and cake discussion at 16:00. Places are available on a first-come, first-served basis, priced at £149 per person. Discounts will be available for companies wishing to register groups of delegates.
The £149 fee for attendance at the taster session will be redeemable against attendance at a future 3-day metocean awareness course. For further information and to register, email

This one day event will focus on the application of simulation tools to solve problems in these new technologies, as well as introducing Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI). The challenges being faced by industry at the current time will be discussed, including addressing physics applications. Presentations will be made by industry leaders as well as regulators and manufacturers. This educational event will primarily focus on wind, wave and tidal energy.
This awareness seminar will focus on the current challenges with regard to both education and the technology. The event will be of interest to engineers and managers who are involved in or interested in learning more about the potential for engineering simulations to achieve safe and sustainable energy production. • Remote (satellite and ground based) Sensing and Marine Renewables – afternoon Development of novel technologies, products and services to support the development of the UK’s marine renewable energy resources, is a high priority in meeting UK and EU 2020 low carbon energy targets. At present, there is recognition across business, policy and regulatory organisations that one of the key challenges in meeting these targets is to reduce the costs of site development, consenting and post construction monitoring programmes. This requires that we utilise existing remote sensing technologies and services to the maximum, and also drive these technologies in a direction which will result in further efficiencies and cost reductions as well as applications development of direct benefit to the end user community. Because of the rapid pace of technology development, in response to newly identified needs in the recent past, it is imperative that the dialogue between industry/business/government and academia is active and on- going – with business/policy need driving technology development where possible.
This round table/workshop, organised by NERC/NOC and the Energy Generation & Supply KTN, aims to bring together various stakeholders to address and discuss these key challenges. For further information contact

Strengthening the marine energy value chain - Strategic technology challenges
It is a challenging time for the marine energy supply chain with constricting deployment forecasts and uncertainty around delivery programmes creating difficulties investing into technologies. However, investment is not without reward and the companies that develop the optimal solutions for technical challenges stand to grab a significant slice of the potentially huge global market for marine energy. At this workshop, we plan to identify the primary challenges facing the marine energy industry value chain and work together to suggest solutions and mitigation methods for tackling them. Learn about approaches from the leading component manufacturers and service providers as we chart a way forward for the marine energy value chain. Further information: David Krohn,
