There are times you just do not want to hear the news someone is offering. When I was young I spent part of my summers on Cuttyhunk, an island 14 miles offshore from New Bedford. It was peaceful, warm summer breezes and the news from the mainland was of no concern. This morning, my offi ce received a call that Wes Lash from Friendship had passed away the day before (25 March). I wondered if the news was true, but unfortunately it was. He was someone I always enjoyed sitting down with and talking about boats. I am really going to miss him. [Obituary on the next page.] In the last issue I discussed some of the problems facing today’s marine businesses as to marketing. There is no question that the website is a must, but one also needs to stay abreast of other types of social media. The two most popular are Facebook and Twitter and both seem to be benefi cial in their own ways. I use both, but never to the degree I should because of time. I am not going to post the trivial things of life. Do you really care about what is for supper or that the cat coughed up a hair ball? I am going to tell you about where I have been and what was going on, simply news of the coast. I also sometimes tell what research project is being worked on and I am sure that is boring for some. I am not sure how many really are interested in any of my posts, but fortunately there are at least a few. This publication is an extension of that where I can write long winded in-depth articles about the news or just something that interested me. However there is an issue about print media in today’s world and that is by the time some of this gets printed it is history to many. For more than

a couple of years I have been playing with the idea of doing an online marine newsletter focused on Maine’s coast. However it may have to be broader to cover subjects from outside our borders that would be of interest too. My interests are extremely broad. I love going through Twitter and seeing what is go- ing on with the Navy, commercial shipping or at the marine museums. However, there is a big problem and that is it is going to take time to create this and do it right. Depend- ing on the scope of coverage it could take a couple of days or more to do. Presently most of this news is out there, just not organized into one source.

Here is another thing to ponder, trav- eling sales people are becoming a thing of the past. I was down talking with Mike Richardson from New England Marine in Portsmouth and he said that he used to see 30 sales people a week and now he says if he sees fi ve he would be lucky. I began asking around and it is the trend. More companies have decided that on the road sales people are a fi nancial burden and have moved them into the offi ce or terminated their position. May be I am old school, but I do not think that you can adequately do your job sitting in an offi ce. For news people with a severe deadline there may not be a choice, but I am sure they do not get the whole or correct story. As for sales it is too easy to say no to a telephone. You may save some money on expenses, but what are you giving up? I am still working on my speech, Ship- building in Maine During the Civil War, which I am giving at Maine Maritime Mu-
