NYC SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS’ STRIKE ENDS AS CITY CONSIDERS NEW BIDS

Te New York City strike by 8,000 bus drivers and attendants, which

stretched out more than a month, concluded Feb. 15 and regular school bus service resumed Feb. 20. Tis was good news to the parents of 152,000 students who rely on the yellow bus to get to and from school daily, especially those with special needs children. Te city spent about $20.6 million in transit cards, taxis and gas

mileage to get thousands of stranded students to school during the strike, according to schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott, but some still didn’t make it there. Attendance in special-education programs plummeted by one-third when the strike started. On the first day back, all 7,700 public school routes were restored and student attendance citywide reached 88.5 percent, DOE spokeswoman Marge Feinberg told STN. Union chief Michael Cordiello, who announced the strike was

over, said this decision was prompted by a letter of support from five Democrats who are vying for Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s seat. In the letter, they asked the drivers to return to work. Local 1181 bus drivers and matrons went on strike Jan. 16 to

protest the elimination of employee protection provisions from future bus company contracts. Tese contracts had not been renego- tiated in 34 years before the city requested bids in December. Feinberg said the Office of Pupil Transportation is currently

reviewing 65 bids and the Panel for Educational Policy is expected to vote on recommendations in May. “Te contracts then would be registered in July and implemented in September when school starts,” noted Feinberg.
