Lo-Q, the Twyford company whose solutions help people to avoid large queues and which create extra revenue for amusement parks, saw its share price rise 29% during February – the highest rise of any Thames Valley-based quoted company.

During the month the AIM- listed group announced it had signed an agreement to install its wristband solution at the Camelbeach Mountain Waterpark in Pennsylvania, to add to its already world-wide list of clients that includes Legoland at Windsor and the famous Dollywood park in America.

It also released preliminary results for the year to November showing revenues were up over 18% at £29.1 million and pre-tax profits were up 16% to £3.2m.

One of the largest share price rises among large companies was that of Micro Focus, the Newbury- based group which confirmed it had completed the acquisition of Orbix, Orbacus and Artix software product lines from Progress Software Corporation for $15m. The deal was delayed awaiting contract consents.

The group provides software that allows companies to dramatically improve the business value of their enterprise applications.

HIBU, the Reading group (formerly known as Yell) which helps consumers find local products and services, announced that although revenues for the quarter to December were down by 14% to £314m, digital services revenues grew by 31% to £45m and profits after tax were up £2m to £19m. Its share price rose 19%.

For Business at Bucks Skills for Business

Bucks New University has an established reputation for education delivery, and is known for its business-facing programmes and services delivered through its business engagement team, For Business.

However, does the business community really understand exactly what it is that a university can offer to organisations, and the breadth of services that are available?

According to Phil Wood, head of enterprise: “It’s normal to look at a university from the outside and consider it to be simply a place of learning and study. The reality is, here at Bucks we are a thriving, professional, business- orientated centre of learning and thought, with a clear focus on providing education and services to meet the demands of 21st century life.

“We have a very diverse range of skill and knowledge sets across our equally diverse departments and schools. For a business that is looking to gain a competitive edge, partnership with a forward- thinking institution such as ours can have significant benefits once you begin to understand what it is that we can do for you.”

The services available at Bucks are channelled through For Business and include leadership and management; logistics; human resources; business continuity and organisational resilience; security design and awareness; engineering and prototyping; bespoke audio and video production and website design.

There's also advertising and marketing; event management; health management education; advice and consultancy; student placements and

internships; and knowledge transfer partnerships.

Wood continues: “When an organisation comes to us with a business problem, we have the breadth of skill sets to help provide the solution. For example, a client may consider itself underprepared for handling unplanned events and incidents and therefore unable to maintain critical functions at all times – in this instance we can train staff in the area of business continuity planning, or provide a bespoke implementation plan.

“The University is keen to work with organisations that are ambitious and aim to meet challenges through confidence in their people, and the knowledge and skills that they can acquire and apply to the business environment. This is where we can help, so why not get in touch with us to find out more about what we do?"
