Project NatureConnect “A

Coming Home by Coming Back to Our Senses by Savannah Smith

s the orienta- tion course facilitator,

trauma specialist and Project Natu- reConnect (PNC) guide for the free 53 Senses Restorative Initiative on April 20, Earth Day, at Ko- reshan State Historic Site, I love sensorily knowing that I’m part of a perfectly orchestrated living system, fulfilling my contract as a conscious human animal living in perfect consort with nature,” says Janet Weisberg. Her pas- sion and actions are focused on helping individuals reestablish their innate sensory connection with the Earth. PNC interactive activities help participants recognize and awaken from their sensory slumber to reclaim their birthright of 53-plus natural sens- es. “Today our relationship with nature is based on our disconnection, and so our minds interpret nature instead of knowing it through personal interac- tions we sense and feel,” Weisberg explains. “We see Earth as an object to be used, labeled, manipulated and controlled. Exerting power and control over nature has become the model which we’ve been taught and to which we have been subjected.” Weisberg says that there is a

healthier, more intelligent way to live. “Let’s imagine what would happen if we were to embrace and reconnect all of our natural senses? Who would we be then, what problems might we be able to solve, and what would life look like from an activated, whole interactive body/brain perspective?” she muses.

Personally im- mersed in this sen- sory resurrection and whole brain function process for more than five years, Weisberg affirms, “It’s not only possible, but it’s also a tangible way to resolve many of our major problems, such as conflicts with each other, destruction of our environ- ment, feelings of separation, depres-

sion, addictions and more.” Through her own PNC practices,

Weisberg has learned that being re- moved from direct outdoor experienc- es, as well as mostly intellectualizing life and living in either the past or the future, separates humans from nature. Yet, she says, nature is essential to our being and can restore self-evidence- sensing powers.

“When people have PNC experi- ences, they stop living their life in their head and learn to appreciate nonver- bal understanding. They move into experiencing life through their bodily senses, many of which they notice for the first time through experiential, nonverbal exercises,” she explains. “The language center in our brain interferes with our ability to feel our experiences, instead of interpreting them. We don’t need words to listen to and connect with nature.”
