he words biomechanical science, physics, thermodynamics and en- gineering principles may never be heard during the typical water cooler conversation after a hearty physical workout at the gym. But that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be part of a discus- sion between fitness trainers and clients in matters concerning the design of fit- ness routines and movement makeovers intended to keep knees, hips and joints vibrant and healthy. fitness trainer, a Bachelor of Science de- gree in Exercise and a master’s degree in exercise with a focus on exercise physiology form the foundation of Jay Weitzner’s business, Symmetry Preci- sion Fitness, where he designs effec- tive and safe fitness routines using the mechanics and physics of exercise. “Everyone talks about all the posi-
tive aspects of physical fitness, but few consider that there can be negative side effects, because our knees, hips and other joints wear out from years of use and repetitive movements. Think of the articular cartilage in your load-bearing joints, such as your knees and hips, as you would the enamel on your teeth. When the enamel wears off, it’s gone, and when the cartilage wears out, it’s bone-to-bone—or joint replacement time,” explains Weitzner, who designs

personalized fitness routines after closely observing and analyzing the biomechanics of a client’s natural body movements from a skeletal and muscu- lar perspective.
“Our joints are capable of a certain number of repetitions, based on load, resistance and direction of movement, which is basically about math, where there’s no room for opinion,” cautions Weitzner, whose company slogan is, “No fads, all fitness.”
He notes that starting the latest fit- ness fad without consulting a personal trainer may lead to injuries. Knowing where muscles attach to bones, what each muscle does and what it can do depending upon its position, is essential for determining the type of exercises and number of repetitions the body can safely handle. “This is the best strategy for preventing injuries and strengthen- ing muscles surrounding joints, which is a great anti-aging approach to keep- ing weight off joints and giving them more good years of life and flexibility,” says Weitzner, who often works with individuals with sports injuries that require rehabilitative exercises.
