162. UFFA FOX’S LLOYD’S REGISTER OF YACHTS, 1962

one volume, 1962, Uffa Fox’s copy, with his name gold-blocked on the upper cover, with 1st and 2nd Supplements

Uffa Fox (1898-1972), probably the best-known yachting personality of the mid-twentieth century, was a notable boat designer and sailing enthusiast who was responsible for many of the developments which contributed to the modern popularity of dinghy racing. Apart from his remarkable wartime invention of a 27-foot lifeboat which could be dropped from an aircraft when rescuing downed aircrew or shipwrecked mariners, he designed many of the best-known classes of boats sailing today. In addition to dinghies, he also built several keel boats and all of his designs drew upon his wartime experiences working with moulded plywood and extruded aluminium etc. A close friend of the Duke of Edinburgh, he wrote several books on sailing techniques and was made C.B.E. in 1959 for his services to yachting.
