a purser’s account and pocket/day book, started from both ends and written in a neat hand, the accounts between March 1860 and September 1861; the day book from September 1856 including detailed list of letters sent and received, favorite ‘extracts’ from various sources, ship daily routines for Inflexible and Chesapeake, resolutions and copied orders, bound between leather boards with marbled end papers, the cover marked Private -- 7½ x 5in. (19 x 12.8cm)


In June 1859 a shambolic Anglo-French assault on this range of forts was successfully repulsed. The next year, an expedition under General Sir James Grant and General de Montauban lead to the successful Third Battle of Taku fort in which Chesapeake took part, and the end of the Second Opium War.
