THE FIRST FLEET
It being the design of the Government to form a new settlement at Botany Bay, on the east side of New Holland, in the Indian seas, for the reception of male and female felons sentenced by the laws of this country to transportation, the following description may not prove unentertaining to our readers…. An excellent and lengthy account of the conditions in Botany Bay, describing the flower, fauna and landscape to be found, as well as references to Captain Cook’s accounts of the inhabitants and cannibals. (10in. of Column Space) all in a complete issue of The Newcastle Chronicle dated September 30th, 1786; also BOTANY BAY EXPEDITION…On the 16th of November, 1787, the signal was given, and the squadron got under way, and continued their course for a time to New Holland; some short tempests interrupting their course, Commodore Phillips removed to supply, and proposed going ahead to prepare a reception at the place of destination: three transports, the Friendship, Alexander, and Scarborough sailed in company, but retarded the Commodore’s course too much, and he did not come to land till the 14th of January, 1788 . a lengthy and brilliant account of Commodore Phillips voyage to Botany Bay, with details of the landing of the ships and convicts, and setting up of the office of Governor; also follows a long account of the local inhabitants, conditions, and animal life to be found there -- 38in. (96.5cm.) of column space in a complete and genuine issue of The Craftsman; or, Say’s Weekly Journal, dated for April 4th, 1789.
