program, “But My Ancestors Didn’t Land in NYC,” will be presented by Sharon Hodges at 6:30pm at the Handley Region- al Library, 100 W. Piccadilly St., Winchester, Va. (downstairs). The Port of New York was the fi rst glimpse of America for more immigrant arrivals than any other port between 1820 and 1924. But more than six million people landed at other ports throughout the U.S. and Canada. Hodges will explore how to look for ancestors


through these other gateways. The meeting is free (donations welcome), open to the pub- lic, and co-sponsored by the SVGS and the Stewart Bell Jr. Archives at Handley Library. Information is available www. svgs.org.

6 Dixie Power Trio


The Barns hosts Dixie Power Trio, a 4-piece group dedicated to the music and sounds of Louisiana. Formed in 1992, the band (led by tubist Andy Kochenour and cornet/ accordionist Zack Smith) has spent the last decade perform- ing for audiences in clubs, con- certs, and schools. The group is based in Fredericksburg, Va., and has toured throughout the United States in support of their seven independently pro- duced recordings. Josephine School Book Club


The fi rst meeting of the 2013 Josephine School Community Museum Book Club will feature a new book exploring un- charted territory, the political views of youth in Sierra Leone, West Africa, China, Jamaica, Russia, and the United States in response to the election of Barack Obama as the fi rst African American President of the U.S. Through Children’s Eyes: President Obama and the Future Generation is based on an international research study that yields some surprising revelations.
