boarding and training. Stimp- son designs training programs based on the needs of each cli- ent. She also provides lessons to adults and children using their horses or one from the stable. Stimpson is unlike other train- ers in that she doesn’t go south for the winter to follow the hunt season in the Carolinas. She stays with all the horses and exercises them throughout the winter. Some clients come ride them on the cold winter days, but winter is a slow time of year.


With miles of trails and ac- cess to Blandy State Arboretum, clients have an amazing abil- ity to ride and ride for hours. Stimpson speaks of one client who does just that. He goes out for a ride with just his horse for company, enjoying the nature and beauty of Clarke County. Other clients from Washington, D.C., or Northern Virginia drive up for the weekends or hunt events. One client lives all the way in New Jersey. Stimpson cares for each clients horse as


her own. Catherine Stimpson has a


passion for fox hunting and working with newcomers to develop their love for it, too. She has participated in local hunts, as well as events in Ire- land and England. She’s not only been part of the fi eld, but whipped-in and led the fi eld for the Blue Ridge Hunt. Stimpson also has trained horses for fox- hunting, some of them former racehorses. Many of the clients also participate in the local hunts too.


It is a sweet sight to see someone so accomplished, ex- perienced, yet young living out her dream. Building a new barn in a time where old barns are falling down around us seems like an act of hope for the fu- ture. Stimpson does, indeed, have hopes.
