This highly anticipated weekend is expected to draw particularly large crowds as the Bluenose II from Nova Scotia will be participating in the Festival, the Adventure will be sailing and dozens of schooners are expected to return to Glouces- ter for this unique sailing event and fun weekend. Mark your calendars! With an eye toward the future, as

well as the past, the Gloucester Schooner Festival Committee has always embraced the goal of involving young sailors in the event. This past year, the Committee chose to broaden this effort and to institutionalize the educational component of the Festival by providing further opportunities for kids to sail on the schooners and giving fi nancial support to local programs that put Cape Ann kids on the water. With this renewed focus on youth and

education, Maritime Gloucester, a non-prof- it organization with a mission of connecting generations to the ocean, will take the helm in 2013 as host of the festival. They succeed the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce which founded the Gloucester Schooner Festival in 1985 and successfully ran the event through its fi rst 28 years. “The Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, with the support of a strong and dedicated

We Need Your Help!

A small group of people, mostly from the Friends of the Boat School (FOBS), gathered to bring the Boat School back to life on 24 January. The School needs $2,000 a month to cover the basic expenses. This is doable, but will not be easy. They do have some donated boats and some new Whitehalls that could be sold to raise some of the needed funds. The rest would have to be raised other ways.

Steps are already being taken and the School will come back to life because of the determination of a few who have never given up hope. Now that few needs your help.
