Slowly the weather is warming and most hope that spring is right around the corner. We were spoiled after unseasonable temperatures of last winter and many hoped for a repeat, but that did not happen. It has been cold and snowy and by now many are tired of winter.

Maine Coastal News is published 12 times a year and is dedicated to covering the news along the entire coast of Maine, Kittery to Eastport. We cover general marine news, commercial fi shing, yachting (power and sail), boat yard and waterfront news and maritime history. Distribution of Maine Coastal News is from Eastport to Marblehead, MA and is free on the newsstand. It also can be by subscription. A year subscription, 12 issues, is $20.00. A single copy is $2.00, which covers the postage. Foreign rates for subscriptions are $40.00 per year. The Maine Coastal News offi ce is located at 966 North Main Street, Winterport, Maine. During the cold and snowy months I always hope to get a lot of research/com- puterization done, and did, but it is never enough. I fi nally fi nished entering nearly 22,000 vessels in the ABS Record for 1879. This source lists a lot of foreign vessels, which is what I needed computerized be- cause a number of the ship disasters that I was fi nding in old newspapers fl ew a foreign fl ag. Now I am taking all the vessels I have computerized and making an index of them. Unfortunately this is not easy since in the “List of Merchant Vessels of the United States” sometimes one vessel got two offi - cial numbers in the fi rst year. Also there are some that had their numbers changed when they were rebuilt. Once completed it will be a good resource I hope. With the snowstorms we have had during the week I was able to get a couple of books read, which are reviewed on page 19. The fi rst was “Maine & the Sea” by Dr. Charles Burden and Nathan Lipfert. This is a quick review of collecting items for the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath over a fi fty year period. The other book I read was “COYOTE Lost at Sea” by Julia Plant. She was writing about her brother, Mike, who did two BOC (singlehanded with three stops round the world) and one Vendee Globe (singlehanded nonstop round the world). He was preparing to run his second Vendee, but

on his qualifying run across the Atlantic to the start in France his racer COYOTE lost her ballast bulb and she capsized. Unfortu- nately Mike was lost. What was incredible about this book was the dark side of Mike before he began racing around the world. I was taken back by some of the escapades, in fact some were shocking.

As many of you know I help publish

“TugBitts,” which is a publication on tug- boats. It has a lot of historical articles, but also touches on some news. There have been a lot of changes associated with technology on a global plane. This has made some of our old ways obsolete. A good discussion took place on the yahoo tugboat group about “TugBitts” and what was good about the publication. However they also mentioned that the news section was old news and prob- ably should not be included. With most of us hooked in via social media we can know almost anything instantly. There are those few that fi ght technology tooth and nail, but if used smartly there is a huge benefi t, both personally and in business. Take Facebook, a lot of people absolutely refuse to use it, but if you want to know what is going on it is one of the best sources. I also use Twitter, which I fi nd a little more useful because it is short bits of information on just what I am interested in. When I write something on either of these it is about where I have been and what is going on. In fact I need to do a better job doing this because no one else goes where I do and some of you might fi nd it interesting.
