Warning for care home

A CARE home in Maidstone has been ordered to raise its standards after inspectors found it had not taken action to improve staff training. The home, at Allington Road, is owned by Maidstone Community Care Housing Society (MCCH), and looks after residents with learn- ing difficulties. The Care Quality Commission issued the so-

ciety with a formal warning after an unan- nounced inspection found staff were not sufficiently trained to deliver the care resi- dents needed. The problem at the home was first discov-

ered at an inspection in July last year. MCCH had said it would make the improvements by

September, but an inspection in November re- vealed the requirements had still not been met. Ian Biggs, deputy director of the CQC, said:

“It is vital that staff working in care homes have the right skills and knowledge to deliver high quality care to the people they are sup- porting. The issues identified here required immediate attention. “Our inspectors will return in the near fu-

ture to carry out another unannounced in- spection. If we find the home is not making the required progress, we won’t hesitate to use our legal powers to protect the people who live there.”

Pub sign ‘would harm character of the area’

GREENE King has been blocked from re- placing a road sign outside The Bull Inn in Penenden Heath. The scheme would have seen the re- placement of a traditional bull image on top of a polewith a larger floorstanding advertising board. Maidstone Council’s decision notice

said: “Due to its height, scale, lighting, design and location, the totem sign is an over-dominant and obtrusive com- mercial feature which would harm the visual amenity and character of the lo- cality. “The siting of the totem sign, adjacent

to the junction with Boxley Road, would impair visibility from the site access, re- sulting in harm to highway safety. “The applicant is advised that amore traditionally designed sign ... would be more acceptable.”

Welsh choir visits THE Rhayader and District Male Voice Choir will join local choirs for a charity concert at Maidstone Gram- mar School for Girls from 7.30pm on March 9. The St David’s Day concert has been organised by Maidstone GP Dianne Gilmore, whose brother sings with the Welsh choir, to raise money for Dia- betesUK. Dianne and her husband Rob have a daughter with Type 1 diabetes, so the cause is close to their hearts. The event will be supported by Bearsted-based choirs Mixed Blessings, Short Back and Sides and Barbishop. Tickets for the Saturday event are available
