Home plan refused A PROPOSAL for a house be- hind 85 Boughton Lane, Maid- stone, has again been refused. Toby Staff, of Maidstone Council’s planning department, said the scheme “would be vi- sually harmful to the character of the area”. A similar proposal was turned down in February last year for being a cramped form of development.

RESIDENTS have renewed their plea for traffic calming measures on a treacherous town road, following a fatal ac- cident. More than 600 residents have signed a petition asking for ac- tion in Sheals Crescent, Postley Road and Hayle Road, where they see drivers exceeding the speed limit on a regular basis. A pedestrian was killed and another badly injured in a colli- sion with a car at the Sheals Crescent junction with Old Tovil Road at New Year. Hayle Road was also the scene

of a crash in May 1986 that re- sulted in the death of three school children, when they were hit by a jack-knifed lorry.

Presenting the petition, Peter Griffiths told theMaidstone joint transportation board: “There are two schools in close proximity and a high number of pedestri- ansinthe area.Thisisa30mph area and the speed limit needs to be enforced or reduced.” Mr Griffiths put forward a number of suggestions, which included a pedestrian crossing, improved signage and an addi- tional speed camera at the junc- tion of Sheals Crescent and Postley Road. Mr Griffiths said the tempo-

rary cones to ease traffic into Sheals Crescent from Upper Stone Street during the gas works had been a help, and sug- gested a more permanent form

of bollards could be considered. The High Street ward had just

been awarded £9,000 to be spent on priority projects and Mr Griffiths argued that this was a prime case to be taken into consideration. Following the meeting, Cllr

Fran Wilson, Maidstone’s Lib- Dem leader, who lives in Old Tovil Road, said: “I have been trying to get something done here for 25 years – let’s hope this time some action is taken.” The board will consider the petition and report back at its next meeting. Sign the petition at
