21 Referendum - Section 30 Debate
The ‘Edinburgh Agreement’ signed by First Minister Alex Salmond and the Prime Minister last year provides the basis for a legal referendum to be held by the Scottish Government. In January, MPs had the
opportunity to consider the part of the Agreement - the Section 30 order - which devolves the power to the Scottish Parliament
to have a single question referendum on separation by the end of 2014. I absolutely agree with
the principle of devolving the power to hold the referendum to the Scottish Parliament. This will be a referendum made in Scotland and will settle this question once and for all.
I used my speech to
highlight that it is also essential that the recommendations of the Electoral Commission are respected, particularly with regard to the wording of the question and funding of the campaigns. Click the play button below to view my contribution.
