T

rainee chefs and waiters are experiencing a taste of international cuisine through an exchange programme involving

Havering College of Further and Higher Education and a training centre in France.

Eight teenagers from The Training Centre for Apprentices under the Chamber of Commerce in Nimes, southern France, have been extending their skills in the training kitchens at the Havering College Quarles Campus in Harold Hill.

Havering College curriculum manager for Hospitality and Catering, Nick Gunyon shared one of his ‘secret’ recipes for a classic burger meal with a sensational sweet twist.

The visitors are to spend their remaining three weeks in England on work placements at top hotels and restaurants – thanks to the excellent business links Havering College has within the industry.

It will then be the turn of six catering and hospitality students from Havering to head out to France where they will receive training in the partner institution before undertaking work experience.

The exchange programme is a Leonardo da Vinci Mobility project, funded by the EU. It was arranged by Nadia Bonnichi, the EU and International Project Officer for International Business Development at Havering College.

She said: “The current Leonardo da Vinci Mobility project is an amazing opportunity for the students to build on their culinary skills, enhance their personal development, raise their cultural awareness and even learn a new language.”

Revolting Rhymes Classic fairy tales with a hilarious twist are leaping off the page and on to the stage with the latest performance from students at Havering College of Further and Higher Education.

Acting and Musical Theatre students in the first and second year of the BTEC Extended Diploma in Performing Arts course will be re-telling Roald Dahl’s outrageous stories in two public performances of Revolting Rhymes next week.

The shows were held in The Space at the Havering College Ardleigh Green Campus in December.

Children from eight local schools have this week been enjoying preview performances with characters such as a gun-toting Little Red Riding Hood, a home wrecking Goldilocks who goes on trial for her crimes and an axe-wielding Prince Charming.

Havering College Performing Arts lecturer Julia Stallard said: “We have adapted Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes into a play. The students have really embraced their parts and local schoolchildren are enjoying the show.”
