Polperro author Charles Mayo together with Sue Elliott, who helped him realise the project of getting his diary published as a book
A Polperro author has published an ‘extraordinary’ diary of his time as a young fireman working on the steam locomotives at King’s Cross, London.
Based in one of Britain’s largest loco depots in the 1950s, Charles Mayo, now 86, discovered the gruelling reality of the tough working conditions at the station.
Keeping a diary during the dying days of steam power, Charles recorded conversations, altercations, accidents and strikes that took place at the depot. He observed racism, prejudice and union politics first hand.
The diary offers a unique glimpse into working life in the mid 20th century – but also tells the
compelling story of a young idealist finding his feet.
Ghosts of Steam is Charles Mayo’s diary reproduced in facsimile, illustrated with black and white photographs.
Charles worked on the book with the support of his former secretary and friend Sue Elliott – herself a published author – who on reading the diary felt it deserved wider circulation.
Together with another friend, Christine Barry, the three invested in getting the diary published as a book, and reaction so far has been very positive, says Sue.
