Notebook continued A sneak petunia and calibrachoa preview for spring 2013
Superbells ‘Double Plum’, ‘Dolce-Dolcedolissima’. Below: Petunia dolissima ‘Pomegranate Punch’. S
carlet red continues to be hot this coming season with a number of very red petunias on the market:
‘Picobella Red’ from Harris Seeds is a magnetic scarlet that will draw all eyes. From Synovaction in Holland comes ‘Cancan Harle-
quin Burgundy’, a deep red with white markings on the petals which are frilled and have a white edge.
‘Bella’ as
a bright salmon red. Patels still make the grade, however and Syncovac-
tion’s ‘Dolce-Dolcedolissima Flambe’ is a pastel pale pink with golden yellow centres and white edges. Some of the petals appear mottled with subtle shadings of pink and even touches of yellow. ‘Martha Washington’ petunia is another stunner . A
semi double with a rose-like blossom, the frilly outer petals fade from rose pink to white. This is an introduc- tion from Burpee seeds, its height is 12 inches with a 14 to 16 inch spread. Back to red, watch for Proven Winners’ new Super-
bells Double Plum calibrachoa. A deep burgundy with darker veins, this double flowering charmer is an eye catcher.
It will spread 12 to 24 inches and trail just as
long, but it has a mounding habit for the tidy gardener. Give it a haircut a few times over the summer to keep it branching and looking full. Another Superbells is ‘Pomegranate Punch”, a bright
cherry red, this little charmer is only six to 10 inches tall, ideal for a feature planter.
