Right: from contemporary to funky, to traditional—kitchens are so versatile to design, suiting any homeowners’ tastes.

Below: customizable, glass-painted backsplashes give kitchens a definite “wow” factor.

lighting with LED lights under and over cabi- nets, a layered effect gives the illusion of more light and adds ambience to the area. Suspend- ing pot lights over islands and eating bars adds visual interest. There is a high demand for larger windows and doors to incorporate natural light into the setting. Modern trends include a high gloss finish on

cabinetry and mixing dark and light woodwork with painted surfaces to make the space interest- ing. Glass cabinetry, oak, cherry, bamboo and recycled wood veneer products on the market offer consumers a wide variety of choices. Small appliance integration has carried over

into banishing the fridge and dishwasher from sight to become part of the cabinetry, hiding behind veneers. Featured built-in wall ovens and counter cooktops with large range hoods have become the main focal point and steal the show. Stainless steel, ceramic and gas range-top options remain popular. Glass backsplashes appear seamless and they

are easy to clean. Some come with a back-painted option which gives a slight reflective sheen that adds a polished look to finish a kitchen. Mosaic tiles are also popular as backsplashes and are a quick and easy weekend project that can give a worn-out kitchen a dramatic update. This along with under-counter LED lighting creates good lighting for workspaces and a nice glow to the kitchen. Some homeowners are compelled to return to

a traditional, nostalgic look and are mixing and matching the old with the new. Decisions are being made largely on personal preference with some consumers boldly injecting contrasting colours via cabinetry or accessories. The only rule or trend is originality of the

homeowner. Anything goes and this is reflected in the products displayed in showrooms. V
