concerns, so in 2005, the couple began to take a serious look at adjusting their own lives. During this period, they held a plant sale on their property and the results were so positive they decided to open a greenhouse and retail business. The property is on a hill which lends

itself nicely to landscaping, and there is also a one-acre pond and a creek that offer variety to the location. Lorraine said that there is a seven-acre wood lot that is harvested, and a reforesta- tion project with the pine and spruce is ongoing. Organic gardening and the promo-

tion of healthy soil is something the couple is passionate about. All the plants featured in the gardens are grown from their greenhouse stock and customers will get an idea of how the plants grow in a natural environment.

An early peony steals the garden show. All of the products in the retail store

are personally endorsed by Lorraine and used extensively in her gardens. Educational workshops and tours of the gardens are organized throughout the season along with special events featur- ing guest speakers. Out of the thousands

of plants

and flowers at Paradise Gardens, the delphiniums are Lorraine’s “queens of the garden”. This sturdy blue flower was one of the first annuals they planted and a celebration is held every year in May in honour of the flowers. “I enjoy the fact that our garden always

is changing. There is always

something of beauty to enjoy each and every day and it is never the same,” says Lorraine of her passion. “Gardening is a metaphor for life. It brings great joy as you live in the moment now. It is like

Columbine glory in their short early summer life. They will die back after blooming leaving room to plant other flowers.
